The English VA is par for the course, really. I don't know if I'm a fan of 2B's VA, but then not everyone can be Laura Bailey, I guess.

So it's basically Bayonetta without the shitty hair moves and the sexual deviant stuff. Really enjoyed it, the combat is great.

But the hair and deviant stuff was icing on the cake!

What does Nier have to compensate?

I didn't even give the English voices a try and immediately switched to Japanese voices + English subtitles.

I'm not sure what the quests in this game are going to be about, seems to be a straight-forward action game.

Latest Edge describes it as a Zelda type game with battles instead of dungeons.

    Sounds great to me!

I imagine the quests will be similar to the first game, really hope so.

The first game was very much a take on the Zelda formula, with a hub area, towns, action combat with a bit o' magic, dungeons and big ol' bosses. There was deeper RPG stuff than the typical Zelda game, but it still took a lot of cues from that franchise.

From what I've played so far, I think this game is brilliant. Will probably buy the black box edition.

Just played the demo and very disappointed. At first I really liked it but then the platform gameplay. Way too much and camera angle all over the place. This is not Nier. I will keep an open mind as this is just a demo but this is not the game I expected.

Yeah it was nice but not quite the second coming it's getting hyped up to be. Will look out for it again around release time. Didn't feel like a game I'd pay full price for tbh.

This is so good. So good. I love that evade so much. It might be my favourite ever action game evade.

I still can't quite believe that the next great Platinum character action game is going to be a sequel to NieR.

    :D :D :D

I am actually grinning like a loon

Just played the demo: that was some good stuff.

Interesting to see how they're working in Nier's trick of moving the camera around, but just the minute-to-minute combat is pretty damn fun overall. Dodging feels satisfying, attacks have a decent amount of weight behind them, and your little shooting buddy looks like he could mix things up a little.

Story looks interesting too, looks like it's going to expand on the first game's theme of 'robots as humans = questions about morality.' Gonna be interesting to see how the main character comes back from a god damn nuclear explosion.

    Looking forward to it.

Tldr: just my impressions of demo. Nothing important. Feel free to skip.

She sounds like Regina from Dino Crisis and it sounds like it's the same actress voicing the Japanese and English dubs. It's a nice touch because she's so fluent. The music is incredible. I've no doubt someone will have ripped the demo ost already.

The world looks bland but I'm sure there'll be more natural/less industrial environments. Solid 60fps/1080p. The demo feels and looks very polished. I like how you control the camera fov - you can get it right up close to behind her, and then there you are slashing away. I hope we get enemies with blood. Or you can distance it just enough that you can take in the environment whilst seeing all enemies on screen.

Shame we have to wait till March. This is the type of game I could do with playing over winter nights.

I changed the evade to O and R2 to USE ITEM/ACTION. I like how the evade system works so it seems like if you were cornered and big spiky thing kept coming after you, you could keep evading on the spot infinite - it's not that you evade and manoeuvre to a clear space because there's only so many evade animations and then your character has to stop. When I was fighting that boss, for a second I thought there'd be an mgs rising style qte/button prompt. Like when she stabbed the boss in the eye finally, seemed like something they'd qte. It's bloody good that you can customise your controls.

I'm not sold on the lock on system. Its responsive, its fluid but I don't like how, it's a toggle but once you kill your target, you gotta toggle it on again. After killing someone, it should auto target the next closest, in front of the camera/nearest to you - you can switch between targets by pressing R3. Combat controls are smooth, deep, fluid, tight but still not as tight as dmc1/3/4.

It'll be interesting what moves you can buy/unlock, then the sword switching, switching between light and heavy attacks, switching between special pod weapon/laser beam etc.

What's exciting is that, it's typical Kamiya deep combat but it's a RPG. Okami was like that. It'll be nice to go town to town but combat like a mofo.

Have you noticed how Squaresoft are on a roll now; they've had Deus ex: md, rise of the tomb raider, final fantasy xv, dragon quest heroes, I've heard top things about dragon quest builders, world of final fantasy, then ff x/x-2 HD. Star ocean v wasn't as good but they putting product out there and now we got nier automata. Alot of these games are goty material. Square have impressed me this year, just wow. And it's their 30th anniversary next month so I'm sure they'll do a psn sale 3 quid a piece for each of the the ps1 era catalogue.

I think is for some people. Look at Ror and mine's reactions, it's genuine and comes from a relief that it just might live up to our impossibly lofty self-hype.

That said, Nier was niche as fuck and a lot of people disliked it. Also Platinum's output is niche as fuck and a lot of people don't see why they are so beloved by their tiny audience. So this'll be double niche as fuck and a lot of people won't see the fuss at all. That's all fine as long as that niche fanbase loves it, which seems like it might be the case based on demo impressions.

I found the demo to be ugly as sin, the art style and the uses of colour couldn't have been more bland and really put me off playing.

I've not tried FFXV yet, but I've been thinking as well how on point SE have been lately. They've put out a lot of stuff this year and all have been stellar. You missed out Hitman and I Am Setsuna too.

They are easily the most consistent AAA publisher right now.

I liked the demo very much. The visual style reminds me of Dragon Age II, which is not a good thing, but the gameplay itself is grand. The camera work is something else, side scrolling platformer, twin stick shooter, with some MGS thrown in. Am I the only one wishing it ran at 30 fps? I can't get over 60 fps games looking like a sitcom... :-(

I am sorry to say I preordered the Black Box edition. Almost 40€ for shipping the bastards. Though still much better than the 100 pounds Shopto wanted to ship the collector's edition of Rise of the Tomb Raider.

There are some drops in the latter part of the demo on a standard PS4. Nothing too bad, sporadic individual moments rather than sections of chugging.

Played the demo multiple times. Smooth as silk in the Pro.

I think the graphics are stunning especially the lighting effects from your pod.

I'm going to get out the Wii U are start on Bayonetta 2 tomorrow.

Third time through now and still finding little things. For instance, if you hit R1 just after a perfectly-timed dodge, your pod fires off an explosive round.

Just copying some footage to USB to make a quick video, as for reason my Elgato has decided to block sound :(

You know what, this is mental, but I've still not played Bayo 2 /o\ I hold the original game as one of the greatest of its generation and the announcement of the sequel was the thing that made me buy a Wii U. I bought the Collector's Edition that looked like the Book of Angels and everything. Then, when it came, I replayed the first one and that kind of sated my appetite for a character action game. I should probably set the Wii U up.

    Ooookay?

Don't get me wrong, I'm the type that doesn't really mind 30FPS in most things, but I would have thought that having 60FPS in a really fast action could only be a good thing?

    Christ man, PLAY IT! :)

It's set at Xmas too (well, for a few minutes...), so there's no better time than now. I've been holding back the urge to play it again myself, but with me getting FFXV for Crizzie I know a fresh Bayo playthrough will only make FF's combat worse in my mind than it really is.

God... are we really getting a Taro penned Square Enix RPG with Platinum combat?

I dunno, personally I find it weird watching sitcoms. Why can't they film them at 24fps to stop them looking like a 16-bit action game?

"God... are we really getting a Taro penned Square Enix RPG with Platinum combat?"

I looked on YouTube and there's a playthrough with over an hours footage in there. I skimmed it bits of it as I didn't want any spoilers.

To answer you question, the answer is a big fucking YES!!

@SomaticSense I know, I know /o\ Part of it is that the Wii U is never hooked up - sometimes I forget I even own one.

I'm not too far from the end of FFXV, so I might make it my next game after that.
