Registered 19 years agoWe were discussing this (well not this because we hadn't heard the punishment but you know) and i raised the suggestion that if it had been an English Club then all English clubs would have been banned for another 5 years -
The fact that it was Milan V Inter is key IMO. If Inter had done it to a club from another nation I suspect that the ban would have been much more severe. -

Registered 20 years agoPerhaps but as the last part of the article says :
In 2001 Inter were ordered to play two European matches away from the San Siro and fined £35,000 after similar crowd trouble at their Uefa Cup tie with Spanish side Alaves.
They've not learnt anything so the punishment should have been far harsher. -
The thing that really gets me is these fines. The whole point of them is that it is a punishment. And yet, they consistently hit clubs with fines that will make no difference to them at all. Realistically, for a top club, anything less than a million is not really going to make a dent.
I say the fines should be means tested. -

It's a fair amount of cash. It's not the players fault, on the face of it I think it's as fair as they can be. It's a shame they can't fine the useless Italian police. The game is so much more about the prestige and finances of this competition than it used to be otherwise I think English clubs would have received something similar after Heysel et. al.
Fine the police? That'd be rich. All they can do is react. it's the clubs responsibility to keep their fans in order. In fact the italian government should fine the club even more because they need to use that police.
Anyway, the punishment seems alright to me. I think many here are underestimating the financial loss this is for Inter.
