Firmware upgrade?

Something that really bothers me with my ipod is the way that when it's been off for a couple of days, or when you attach it to a pc, it totally forgets what it was playing at the time. My zen used to remember it's position in the playlist until you chose something else.

Is there anything i can do to get my ipod to work in the same way?

Stop the battery from running completely empty should do the trick.
/plays everything on shuffle anyway ;)

    No. That's not the problem.
When it shuts down having not been used over a weekend, or when i plug it into the pc it loses it's place.
The battery has never run right down.

What really knacks me off is when it forgets the click preference so from being totally silent to use it just turns on the click when button press noise after a while of not being used.

Must be a freak of my player. All the other settings are saved but that one seems to default, on all firmware upgrades I've had the same.

No sir, when it turns off it wipes the settings. Happens on mine too.

The reason it does that apparently is because normally the iPod just goes to sleep but the hard drive keeps spinning, only if you haven't used it for a day does it power down completely, including the hard drive, to prevent unnecessary wear & tear. I assume that when it powers down the drive it can't 'remember' where it left off. Firmware upgrade won't help I'm afraid (unless you can find a haxxie to stop it powering down which won't help your battery or disk life).
It's not that simple. The hard disc's head doesn't hover over the track when it's on pause, like a CD does (or a record does if you lift the needle). In fact, because of the anti-skip stuff, it probably doesn't hover over the track even when it's playing it.

I don't see why the iPod couldn't write it's record of what track it's playing to the hard disc (or any flash RAM it's got) when it powers down, but obviously they didn't think to do that. It's the powering down of dynamic RAM which causes it to forget what it's doing, not the hard disc.

Does this happen with all iPods? The wife was thinking about getting one but this would piss her right off - her car CD multichanger doesn't remember its place either and that really pisses her off.

Wack! Maybe yours are magic :(

I've resigned to the clicker now. Quite often my iPod will stay off for a couple days and I can't be fucked to keep going back and turning it off.

May I also add that I wish I had an automatic assault rifle to pepper the crowd of students on the street outside my flat with hot, vengeful lead?

Blimey, mouse is yours a 4G? My 3G clciker stays firmly off despite letting it run down completely on a couple of occasions. Other things tlike the clock have reset but not the clicking or the main menu settings

Otherwise I would have gone postal my now, there is nothing more annoyng that mobile phone keysounds or clicking ipods

It doesn't happen on my 2G or my 3G.

    That must be it.

edit - can I add that if my iPod did that (start clicking) it'd be on a one way trip out of the nearest window?
