Registered 17 years agoI've used Uber in London, Stockholm and - just this weekend - Prague. It's a pretty perfect system, and removes all the hassle of language barrier, awkward phone calls and dodgy price gauging. -

Registered 15 years agoUber is brilliant. OK it's run by a big bunch of money grabbing cunts but then so are a lot of big bussines. It's so convenient. I use them way too much really but it's just so easy and the prices are great. I would find it hard to go back to the way things were before. -

Registered 7 years ago@Tonka agree 100%.
I think that the idea of the service is great, but the business seems to be based on trying to pretend it's not a taxi service but a 'facilitation platform', and therefore not bound by any employer responsibilities or transportation laws.
I know that makes me sound all lefty, but at the end of the day its the taxpayer who will subsidise these things if the employer doesn't, and it seems to me that Uber's business is largely based on local cities and governments subsidising its business model.
But fuck yes, it's about time someone brought taxi services into the modern world. -

Massive drop with no social security or benefits of any kind and run by a company that breaks laws as they see fit.
No question it's the future, surely normal taxi drivers should just become Uber drivers? Or is it the case that would be a massive drop in wages, presumably, and that's why they hating on it?
It is literally organised crime in a lot of regions it operates. -

Registered 16 years agoSurely most taxi drivers are self employed with few benefits and little job security?
I'd also imagine not having to shell out for expensive licences and tests outweighs the lower ride fares. -

Fuck sake. Tube only from now on then, not going back to paying black cabs an absolute fortune. -

I use them a lot because the convenience is just too great, but any move to force them to sort their shit out should be welcomed. -

Registered 14 years agoI guess we'll start seeing a lot more ads for Hailo around, then. Hopefully they managed to crib the good bits of Uber well enough.
Edit: huh, looks like they were taken over by mytaxi.

Registered 17 years agoHopefullly this will just force Uber to comply with the rules and they'll be back. Otherwise its just back to standard minicabs for me. Certainly won't be using the overpriced black cabs. -

Registered 13 years agoDon't user Uber, but I always thought they were filling a gap in the market and were providing a 21st century cab/private car service.
But there have been way too many complaints about their business practices and the way they treat their employees, so maybe this news is justified somewhat. -

Uber have the right to appeal the ruling.
I posit TFL are withholding a license to force Uber to change their practices as asking them nicely has not worked.
Can TFL enforce a limit on the number of licensed uber taxis on the road? -

None of them are employed by Uber in the first place. That's just one of the many reasons this has happened.

Registered 18 years agoFucking hell, the idea of ringing a minicab office waiting 20 minutes and ringing again to chase them up is not appealing.
Uber has benefited me massively.
I am all for treating their drivers better but the safety issue is one which needs to be applied to the entire industry. -
