Maybe a mock up, maybe a pre-design but having seen the new PS3 in T3 magazine this month, I can't say I'm that impressed.

    1) It's tiny (where the fock is all its legendary processing power going to come from!?)
    2) It's Multi-DVD (oh joy!)
    3) I'm bound to get it mixed up with my Portable CD player! Argh

    Anyone else seen it!?

Not seen it. Got any linkage?

Also, if it's that tiny, maybe it's actually the PS2.5?

Found it. You can just make out the picture on the left of the magazine cover here and it does indeed look like a Discman with a controller stuck to it.

    Hmmmm...

TBH, I don't really care what my consoles look like. Does it really matter? It could look like a teapot for all I care as long as it plays games. :-)

The frame in that page refuses to open. Goddamn stubborn frames!

    Does anyone else have pics?

I very much doubt that's the PS3. I mean c'mon T3 getting it first and not even a full cover story. It's just a mock up to help sell a few more copies.

Didn't IBM recently announce the Cell Chips (that PS3 is supposed to use) won't be finished till at least 2007? Forget the site I saw that on but it could be Cnet

2007? I know nothing about this kind of stuff, but that date seems a little to far ahead even for me. We'll be living on the moon by then.
  • Deleted user 6 May 2003 12:32:55
    2005 I think it was.

I don't think even Sony know what the PS3 is gonna look like at the moment.

2006 then. Not the news I read but it's recent (April 21st 2003)

I'd guess that Sony has a number of design prototypes (remember the shiny X Xbox, or Intels concept PCs), but until they decide on when and what to release hardware wise, then all they'll be is concepts.

It looks like a mockup, by that really tossy designer bloke whose name escapes me at the mo.

Too small to be a console. "Interesting" article though, in that it manages to give absolutely NO information whatsoever about the thing...!

It has to be a mock up, the final design will look far worse that this!

I got that issue of T3 a few weeks ago. It's NOT the new PlayStation 3, silly.

It's a mock-up that T3 commissioned by product designers... I can't remember their name, but they're a pair of product designers who featured in a Channel 4 series a few years back, one looks a bit like Bill Bailey minus beard.

Anyway, the design was quite absurd really - essentially, a discman stood atop a MUSHROOM shape, which was used for a fan (WTF?!) and it read GameCube sized discs, and had Wireless LAN connectivity. That was about it really. T3 should probably ask for their money back...

Interesting stuff about the CEL processor. I wonder if someone's been watching "Terminator" and looking at those nice 3-D circuitry processors...!

I think people who bought T3 should ask for their money back! That mag is a load of rubbish. And then those loud, in-your-face idiots at work will ask you if you've seen the new PS3. Mags like T3 make idiots think they're instantly knowledgeable, l33t, and well-informed.

I'm always doubtful about a 'technology' mag that has scantily-clad babes on the cover... loses a bit of creditibility.

Sorry :) I was in an airport at the time though, it was either that or Cosmopolitan (and I didn't want to look pervy - though T3s cover doesn't help).

T3 is essentially "look at some images of these spanky new hi-fis/phones/gadgets that won't be available for ages and will cost more than the GDP of a small africa country" magazine. For people to read on planes or trains.

IBM have more than one project involving processors called 'Cell' - one project is for making processors specifically for supercomputers which use lots of small processors with high speed interprocessor comms. Another project is the IBM/Toshiba/Sony 'Cell' project for which bugger all details have been announced - except that something from the project is destined for the PS3.

I didn't even buy the mag, I just saw someone reading it and asked for a look-see..

    Anyway, er, moving swiftly on.

Work on this is quite far down the line - this alliance was formed over 2 years ago for this project. The 2007 date stems partly from the complexity of the design, andf partly from the difficulty in getting decent yeilds of the chips.

Interestingly (or not) as part of the project the group have licensed a super-fast interconnect technology that allows some seriously huge amounts of data to move across the system - I am guessing this is part of the idea of having multiple boxes that can be connected.

That T3 picture is most definately not a mock-up of the PS3 - as far as I know, they have done a small amount of conxcept work, but nothing more.

Presh the 2007 date was for an entirely different project - check the location, staff involved etc by searching on IBMs research site and this beomes clear - there is very little detail about what the Sony/IBM/Toshiba project is apart from the fact that the location and project staff are entirely different. BTW very few/no details of the Sony/Tosh/IBM project are available on the IBM site - you have to check the Sony and Toshiba announcements.

The super fast interconnect technology is for CPUs in the same box to communicate - its for super computers - the cell refers to the cube model for processor connections.

Looking at the picture on the cover, it looks alright. It looks Modern. Lets face it. Who thought PS2 looked gorgeous in it's first photo shoot?

But, it's NOT a proper mock-up of the PlayStation 3.

As it says in the magazine, T3 THEMSELVES commissioned some product designers to have a GUESS as to what the PlayStation 3 might be like.

Sony themselves have nothing to do with that mock-up, and it's not even remotely official.

The mushroom fan just looks horrible (you have to see in the mag to truly understand), and Sony would never have taste THAT bad.

Though it is possible the PS3 will go for a discman style. Unlikely I think though, as I doubt the technology will allow for super consoles THAT small within the next 2-3 years.

Christ alfuckin mighty talk about shooting the messenger.

On a side topic, what the fock is it with console sales figures at the moment? WHY, tell me WHY are people STILL buying the PS2 in droves (the only console allegedly still breaking the 10,000 unit mark per week)

No decent quality new releases in ages, really showing its age...

So why is it still selling so many units!!!!

    True, and probably true.

But what's the last decent Xbox title you can remember? And that's still outselling the Cube, which has had two blistering titles in the last couple of months. There's no accounting for taste... and cheap games. PS2 games are cheap, ergo people buy it in droves. That said... Silent Hill 3's out this month. That should be a corker.
