For some reason the image of that boy with the huge streak of snot hanging from his nose on Outset island (Zelda) has popped into my head.

I certainly wouldn't let him near any console of mine!

That's not saying that your lad has got a problem with excess nasal effluvia there, WOPR! :)

agreed, i really liked the auto-jump, it did screw me over on a couple of occasions ("no.. jump down the hole, not into the lava you cluts!") but that was probably my fault for forgetting.

weirdly, i hated metroid prime for the jumping, it felt wrong. i mentally had to remember to press 'jump' a little later than my reflex's told me, it always looked as if i was too far from the edge of the platform when i wasn't.

Would have to agree - worst bloody idea ever - a platformer where you can't see how close your feet are to the edge of the platform (the amount of times I've thrown a wobbly because Samus has just "drifted" over the edge of a jump! DOH!)

Am enjoying Zelda a bit more. Well into Taura Island (one of the best bits I've seen so far but no spoilers) - The few camera niggles and other bits and bobs seem to have been forgotten and I can fully understand the comparison to a "playable cartoon" more than any other game I've seen.

Hmm... can't say I've had a problem with that at all! I guess it depends on what you're used to...

Hmmm, I am reminded of someone I know, who hated Metroid when they first played it, and now really likes it, having given it a bit more time and got into it.....

    True enough....

I'm like that with most games though, I think there are very few games that hook me from the get-go (Ico, Animal Crossing, and the GTA series being the only ones I can think of). But revisiting them seems to give 'em that extra "something" that makes me wanna keep playing till they're done and dusted. Only problem I have with Zelda now is prising the other half's claws off the controller!!!

    Note to self:
Do not show Zelda to 'other half'. Under any circumstances.

Which one is Taura island? I think the islands have different names on the UK version from the US one.

BTW, talk to the fish, a couple of them have information (about where to go next) that you probably can't make progress without.

Oh and I still hate slidey ice levels!

The *reverse psychology* tactic works for me. I tell my Missus to have a go and that she'll really enjoy it etc, etc and then eventually she'll get so pissed off with me that she'll refuse to have a go!

    Heh. Job's a good 'un. :)

Mind you, I am helped by the fact that the only game she's ever actually liked was N64 Mario Kart. Go figure...

Taura Island is the one with "The Great Pirate Bomb-Shop Heist" on it.

One of the funniest bits of the game, IMHO (apart from the snot nosed kid...!)

My other half used to be a nursery nurse and one of the things that made her quit was when snot-nosed kids like that used to cling to her...!!!

faux low polygon? sorry, but i can't understand that theory. why would any developer use a lot of polygons to create the visual effect of a few polygons. its like buying a pound for £10

i realise that blocky graphics and low-poly graphics are not the same, but considering its running on a modified Mario Sunshine engine, its never pushing anywhere near the amount of polygons as the aformentioned, and it doesn't even have the water effects which were present in mario sunshine (well, it does.. but they are not very frequent), and while both games have the same physics system, Mario had alot more moving at any one time.

Jak and Daxter was also running at twice the framerate (60 opposed to Zeldas 30)..

i realise there is no rule saying every game has to use 100% of the machines power, but i was still more a little underwhelmed by the graphics.

Achieving the look of simplicity (i.e. with cel chading) conversly takes a lot of geometry. To fool the eye into thinking that the smooth flatshaded shadow on the boat's sail (for example) requires a smoothly graduated curve. Besides I wasn't claiming it was a monster poly pusher I was saying that it most certainly isn't 'low'. It still knocks J and D into a cocked hat for style - even pushing less polys and at a lower framerate.

    I'd have to agree.

Comparing J & D, Ratchet and Clank and Zelda...which one to you looks more like a "playable cartoon" ?

To me it's Zelda. If anyone ever sat down, got themselves a video camera and then over-dubbed classic "Loony tunes" sound effects over what they'd videod, the illusion of a playable cartoon would be complete...

As someone's already said, it does take a heck of a lot of complex geometry to make curves look properly curved, something the developers of Rayman could use a lesson in.

I'm having as much fun playing this as I did with Zelda, Link To The Past and Ocarina of Time. The great combat, puzzles and exploring - it's all there. I think the toon-shading looks great as well. I must be one of the only people who didn't like "adult Link" in the N64 games.

Well I got this little gem last Friday and have loved it from the start - Was quite worried that the hype wouldn't live up to the game actually! Had the mantra 'This game is amazing' going through my head as I first started...Worked for me!

Someone did mention the far away blurring that takes place in another thread - Anyone had any probs with this?...Kinda hurts my eyes a little at first but I guess I got used to it.

I've got a problem though....Got Zelda and Total War last week and picked up Viking add on and HOI yesterday...what the hell is a guy to do?

/Must stop buying games so much/

Don't worry, with the summer about to start it'll be a long time before there's anything else worth buying, so you'll have plenty of time to play through all these new games.

I'll pick up Vice City on Friday and that'll probably be it until Half Life 2 at the end of September.

The Deku tree gives it to you before sending you to the forest, you can't get into the forest proper without it.

No gamefaqs either?? Honest? Cross your heart?
My wife gave me one small hint on one section (she's further in than me) but other than that it seems quite logical. It can't last though - I'm normally so shite at these kind of games.

By the way I gave up on Harry Potter - those poxy library 'stealth' sections got on my tits. If I want to play Splinter Cell I will, but I don't, so I won't, er...

    /scratches head/
Hey WOPR in Potter did you try using the ballons in the sections you need to sneak past people? Worked for me everytime...

To say i love this game is an understatement. This Game rules everytime i play i want to get the next item or looking on the little island around the ocean. This Game offers so much to those who are willing to look past the little niggles. People who hate it should just play it a bit more see if it dont hook you i bet it will eventually.

Metroid Prime did this to me and that got really annoying when i couldnt put it down till i had found my next item.

Im quite far or i think i am im in the Air temple which is currently very fun.

Goddammit still no delivery from the EG shop! Probably not their fault, I blame the UK Post Office as orders from Hong Kong and Australia seem to have no problem arriving within a week. Bah!

If it's not here tomorrow morning I'll buy it locally and send the gameplay one back when (if) it arrives... :(
