Well if you are Jabba, when you are a crime lord, you can do anything. Like you can kiss them, *Gets a nod of approval.*, you can do anything, you can grab a girl by the goolies and she'll let you. *Nod turns the other way.*

Disney have fired the directors for this citing the usual 'creative differences'.

I don't know if it's good or bad in the long run. I love The LEGO Movie but I don't care much for the Jump Street films (they aren't bad, just average) and I've never seen Meatballs (though heard really good things).

Interested in hearing of the replacement though.

It's going to take a hell of a director to make it not shit.

Sounds like producer Kathleen Kennedy was being a pain in the arse from day one and wanted them gone

No, it sounds like they didn't get along with the process of shooting a SW film according to Lucasfilm expectations. Reports are they they clashed with Kennedy and Kasdan, which made filming difficult. It doesn't really matter who's in the wrong, Lucasfilm have been doing SW a while and are expecting a certain approach to it - if the directors don't line up with that then it just makes it impossible to continue.

Nothing says Han Solo quite like Ron Howard.

Wrong choice in the first place imo. Not that I think anyone should be making a Han Solo film, but these guys are strictly in the spoofy/self-referential genre, which isn't right for this. It needs a little tongue in cheek, but not that much.

    Ron Howard though...nah...

I guess he directed Willow which gives him a little provenance.

I dunno. I think a SW 'comedy' has got legs and it certainly would have been a palate cleanser after Rogue One.

I suppose it depends on your reverence for the character, but I would much rather have seen a wacky space caper than a standard sci-fi chase movie or whatever they plop out.

It was never supposed to be a comedy though. They were referring to it as a western.

You always say these things like you are producing the movie. How do you know a pair of renowned comedy directors werent heavily leaning on the whimsy button?

I remember reading an article about Josh Trank, director of Chronicle and the fucking abysmal fantastic four reboot. It seems to to follow the pattern of what's happened here whereby a lot of studios are hiring indie directors for their blockbuster franchises because they are cheap and get little to no creative control. This situation is more weird because this pair have directed quite a few big movies. Kinda makes it seem like how Edgar Wright got booted from Ant Man because he didn't want it to be an advert for the next marvel film.

I'm sure they wanted to - I imagine that's where some of the problems came from.

Kennedy had her own ideas about how the film should be shot. In an interview with Variety last year, she said she wanted the film to have “…a heist or Western type feel,” adding, “We’ve talked about [Frederic] Remington and those primary colors that are used in his paintings defining the look and feel of the film.”

Also it goes beyond tone, reports say that they were given no control of how they ran their set, Kasdan and Kennedy didn't like how framed shots nor the way they directed the cast. Plus Kasdan hated them.
