If the away team is on the planet and says "Tamawawa to enterprise" or something the captain says "Go ahead" that means the captain heard the "Tamawawa to enterprise" bit.
But what if he said "Tamawawa to engineering"? Would the whole ship just hear that and engineering just has to pick up?
I'm baffled... -
WANT!
And I'm not a nerd.
Seriously.
I'm not. -

It would be the same as Voice dialling I assume and be directed to the appropriate section.

Tamawawa to enterprise goes to the Bridge.
Tamawawa to engineering goes to the Engineering section.
Yes I also want one, provided it makes the appropriate sounds. -

Indeed, but in that case the captain would not hear the "Tamawawa to enterprise" bit, just a chime or something? Yet they repeatedly show that that bit is heard.
I even thought, well, the computer must record it and then replay it in the appropriate area. But then for the person on the ground there would have to be a delay at least as long as the phrase he had just spoken which there never is... -

That is indeed awesome. If I had any spare money, I might get me one. -

You're dangerously close to finding something illogical in Star Trek... which I struggle to imagine, there must be a logical explanation

Registered 16 years agoI'd prefer a Bluetooth TNG Combadge, to be honest. Is that even a thing? I'm aware the quality would probably be shocking but I'd feel cooler (yes I know I wouldn't actually BE cooler because I'd be a nerd smashing a Bluetooth headset against his chest) tapping a badge to answer it. -

The real difficulty about that is, I guess, to filter your voice out of all the noise and make it well understandable. But with the advance of intelligent speech and voice recognition, it might actually work in the not too distant future.

Sometimes I think universal translators might just be a lazy excuse for everyone speaking English. Sometimes. But maybe I'm just hypercritical again.
