I just started my own review site, where I actually do me best to describe the bloody game. Feel free to look below. Obviously it's a bit empty now, but I'm hoping to gradually keep ploughing on with it. -
@brigadier
Best of luck dude. Both sites I used to write for are all but gone now - it's a tough old world out there for Videogame sites.
But...you do get free games. It took away all the pleasure for me when I had to write reviews to a deadline though. -

Thanks I'll need it!
Thankfully, it's just a hobby for me to do in my rather generous free time. Any money made from it will just be a bonus. -

Registered 13 years agoNever mind the reviews, do the EG staff think it's a Bank Holiday today? Not a single article so far. I'd at least expect the usual charts article and some sort of mention of the Xbox Live servers shitting themselves yesterday. -

Tell me where the awful games reviewer touched you, Jimmy. It's ok, you're safe now! -

Peter, you've lost the news! -
Donlan could write about beer shits after a heavy night out and it'd still be a worthy read. -

I quite enjoyed that review to be honest. Yes, he goes quite in depth and it isn't a literary masterpiece. However, I think he made some interesting points when linking to Korean cinema - as random as it felt when he b-lined onto Edgar Allan Poe...
I'm going to have to go with the 'I play games for fun and enjoy them for what they are' school of thought. I mean, I loved The New Order, but I never got this engaged with it:
It's not so much about what the game got wrong, it's more the 'A'-Level English Lit pseudo-pretentious wankathon about games as a medium that annoys me.
But let's not slip into critiquing reviewers for not being a literary master if we ourselves aren't being a literary master when critiquing them. If he wants to think of himself as awesome - great, let him and if others thinks he is awful then at least they now know to not watch any more.
I think the Moff's law stuff sums it up really well to be honest. If one doesn't enjoy reading/watching/consuming this media then don't.
To be on topic of the thread, whilst recently I too have noticed/read few reviews. I tend to only read (word for word) reviews of games I am interested in and anticipating a purchase of. Games I have never heard of I'll leave for friends to recomend/put on when I'm at theirs. -

Eurogamer don't give full reviews to games they've only played at review events. Thus why there's only a first impressions piece about MGS on the front page right now.
The review will be up when they get to play with the final code, which will probably be when the general public do. -

Whats the point then? Its a bit late for a review when the game is already on sale.

The point is "gamers" tend to be a whiny bunch who go "WHY DID YOU GIVE UNITY AN 8 WHEN IT'S SO BROKEN?"
And the answer is "because the reviewer only got to play the game at an event and didn't encounter the issues because of it". And of course that leads to more whining from gamers.
So maybe think about not pre-ordering games, and perhaps wait a week or two before buying them. Especially a SP like MGS. It's not going anywhere. -

Registered 16 years agoIf you're the sort to pre-order stuff you're confident you'll enjoy, why wait for a review anyway? Don't hold off to read an opinion from someone else who might not enjoy it as much as you will. Buy it when you want it

A review is somebody's opinion and the best reviews tend to incorporate smart and sensible opinions that swing you into thinking about something differently. It needn't be done immediately before release at all; those thoughts can persist until the game is an established classic. Good games don't (or at least shouldn't) have a best-before date and views about them don't either.
I can't deny that reviews serve an excellent purpose of bringing into view games (anything!) that would ordinarily be missed, but looking at them as simply there to enlighten your consumer spending the days before release is silly and sad. -

Well they don't seem to give f full reviews at all lately. The has been maybe one review a week the past few months and loads of games released and ignored.
