Hoo boy, this preview has me all types of excited!

The finest summary of Stellaris’ aims came mid-way through the half hour presentation and discussion in which Fåhraeus and Johansson unveiled the game. “We’re not creating one specific universe. It can be any sci-fi universe.” Johannson was referring to the way in which the procedural galaxies are more than a collection of planets and stars. By the late game you might find that one of your science ships has become the Event Horizon, ripping a hole in reality to a dimension of horrors. Before you know it, you’re scrabbling to militarise in order to survive a fight against invaders from beyond and you’ve accidentally fallen into Warhammer 40K.

Or maybe you train the world’s greatest scientist-adventurers, create the most advanced ships in the universe, and set up silent listening posts on the moons orbiting planets that are home to pre-spacefaring species. You can learn from them, guide them and eventually become their patrons. You are a Banksian Culture.

    Looks very interesting.

This might be the 4X that breaks my Distant Worlds addiction.

All kinds of hyped for this.

I wonder how many expansions/dlc there will be? Similar to the EU and CK models or more of a stand alone game?

There will be expansions - it was mentioned in the Q&A section at the end of the video Sparra linked above. Unsure of how many, but I imagine that they'll follow the CK2/EU model since it apparently works for them.

Expansions are nice, but Paradox games can end up costing a fuckload if you want the full-fat experience.

    A few things mitigate this:

    1) Steam sales
    2) You don't need expansions to carry on playing the game
    3) The core games are so rich, deep and complex that everything else is just more variety/tuning which you get anyway.

I usually stay a couple of expansions behind and pick them up in steam sales. I don't always like every expansion but generally like the way they do things. However, it will probably be a few months until mechanics are patched and stable.

One thing to be certain of is that things will change a lot and it'll be interesting to see the game develop over the long term.

As someone who has bought CK2 expansions purely for features they add to the Game of Thrones mod, I don't think I have a probem with their model.

I think as far as developers go, Paradox are one of the better ones when it comes to content in expansions and DLC.

They do plenty of feature filled expansions, but also do the little cosmetic DLC's.

Yes, if you are like me and bought EU4 at launch and then subsequently bought every expansion and most minor DLC, it can end up costing quite a lot. But they generally make the games that I ultimately end up sinking hundreds of hours into, so I consider it worth it, plus their base game tends to be a little cheaper at launch aswell.

I'll be getting Stellaris and Hearts of Iron 4 at launch, so hopefully some EG Multiplayer is on the horizon.

Pretty sure I read something explicitly referencing Banks's 'Culture'. Might habve just been fan speculation mind...

I've been using Google Cardboard a lot recently. When that video started I automatically thought it was going to be 3D.

I heard that apparently the videos with Quill18 in them are from January, just held back until now to be shown.

The stream tomorrow is going to be with an up to date build, so will likely have more polish.

Don't think I'll be playing as the Blorg, a good design that's a bit too disgustingly detailed ;)

Any resemblance of the Blorg to a burned, tumour-ridden penis are entirely accidental.
