    Just came to my attention
    bad bad

    Lawrence told Watchdog:
"I've had a PlayStation 1 and the next logical step was a PlayStation 2, about two months after the warranty ended I started getting disc read error. You turn the console on and you hear a click sound which you know contributes to a disc read error."

"More than 50 million people worldwide find consolation, in a Sony PlayStation 2 console."

Not that I'm sticking up for Sony but I didn't see 50 million people complaining to watchdog, just two guys who probably tripped over the controller leads one night after one too many pints of woodpecker cider, and couldn't screw a brand new PS2 out of Sony, so thought they'd whine to the Beeb.

    Whoa!

    I wouldn't exactly put my PS2 down as;

"one of the most complex pieces of technology in the world"

    lol.

    "You'd think they'd learn, wouldn't you?"

Course not. This way they make big profits on selling poor quality gear. Say what you like about the Xbox, at least that thing feels like it could withstand a full nuclear blast and still keep on going...the PS2 (and the PS1 before it) always looks like it's on the verge of a breakdown (specially with the way the drive sounds on some of the newer games. It's bloody alarming to hear the poor thing chugging away like that!)

If you DO get problems, and know someone who's about to buy a PS2....

    1) Get them to buy it from Argos
    2) Substitute your busted one for their working one
    3) Take it back to Argos and get a replacement. They never check the serial number of the unit matches the box, so you get a brand new PS2 for nada, nothing, free (of course this does depend on you finding said mate!)

dont places like argos offer a full refund if you decide you dont want it too, so you could buy a new one, swap it over and take it back saying you dont like it and want a refund.

(touch wood, rub lucky rabbit's foot, cut leaf off 5 leafed clover)

Mine neither, but it has always sounded like the drive's about to pack up so I don't worry about it...

My PSX survived a year of university, 2 1m drops and 3 years of being constantly moved around. Last time I saw it in '99 it was still going strong. It was one of the original PSs as well, so it didn't need to be chipped to play, uh, import games!

The only problem I've had with my PS2, which I bought when GTA3 came out, is it crashed a few times when I first got GTA:VC. Popped a drive cleaner in, gave it a couple of goes and it's been fine ever since.

Watchdog has really gone downhill since Nicky Campbell has taken it over, it was pretty awful with Anne Robinson but it's got worse.

I do appreciate what Watchdog tries to do but just lately they seem to be really scraping the barrel with some of the consumer complaints.

If Sony have got any sense, they'll just turn up and say "Look, the thing is out of warranty, if they want it fixed they've gotta pay for it or at least prove that it's down to shoddy design that it's busted, and not one of them dropping the thing"

Chew that smug scots git a new a-hole, big S!

    Whizzo,

Where might I get a drive cleaner for the Ps2?

It's just one of those CD/DVD lens cleaner discs, the one I got was about a fiver from Game. VC crashed, it got stuck trying to read data by the way it happened, 3-4 times before I used it, my PS2 has never crashed since.

On the subject of CD cleaners, I have had problems with them in the past, they fucked at least one of my CD players, get a good branded one.

Watchdog occasionally do some good stories on people getting ripped off, but far too many just seem to be picking on a big company with the "might" of the Beeb for the sake of filling half an hour of television very few people will bother to watch.

I mean, if there really was a design defect in the PS2 there'd be a lot more people out there complaining about it than Watchdog seems to have managed to find.

/me despairs about the waste of all our licence fees...

Good answer Peej, that is my feeling too, always prefered brunettes and curvy bodies, none of this too slim to withstand a small draught thing.

I think many problems with the PS2 come from over-heating. I do house removals, and beleive it or not every Playstation I have came across is badly blocked up. All the vents are covered with dust. Most people don't treat their consoles well, and wonder why they expire after a year.

Did you ever see her in Dark City, for some reason I find her more attractive in that than Beautiful Mind, perhaps it's the character too.

Actually thought it was part of the dress, crumpled up, and went with that because she freakin' looks about 8.

The one on the right looks nice though. :)
