Elvis was popular because he was that white guy (see Eminem). He stole the music and went pop. Led zeppelin are incredible but they stole the music again, most of their first album was straight up theft.

Elvis wasn't popular because of his voice, looks and charisma.
    He was just white.

I can understand where the idea that white people "steal" black people's music comes from, but unless you are a downtrodden African American (which Revan may well be this week) then it's not really a view you can be excused for expressing. It's pretty ignorant and more than a little racist.

"most of their first album was straight up theft" is a massive exaggeration and stupidly disrespectful of wonderful songwriters and one of the most influential bands of all time.

Its fact that that they used to steal. The steeling isn't there now due to copyright laws but the white branding still happens. Any new genre or sub genre pops up the record labels will manufacture some white acts to top the charts, meanwhile the originators are left out. If iggy was black she wouldn't have even got a look in, she white so she topped the charts everywhere.

just for starters the three biggest tracks on 1 were just straight up stolen.

Okay I can't take this anymore. Regardless of all of the other, valid points which make your posts hilarious, you CANNOT wax lyrical about music theft when hip hop - even those artists which you consider black enough - is fundamentally based on sampling.

Hip hop is more about the lyrics and like you say it is samples, short bits chopped up to make a new sound. Led zeppelin on dazed and confused and bring it on home for example are just fully used with no writers credit. In hip hop albums the original cut gets a credit on the track list.

Of other black peoples music so it is allowed as it's supporting the community. 90% of popular music since the 1950's has been "this is good let's find a white person who can do it because then we can sell it." (Actual Radio 4 quote)

jake Holmes, muddy waters and howlin wolf. All three were not even re arranged much and none got credit.

The black artist that Jimmy Page stole Dazed and Confused from (the one in the middle):

Hound Dog by Elvis was originally sang by a fat black woman from Kansas which makes the lyrics make more sense.

There is hardly a lack of black artists making it big in HipHop and RnB.

but it's lost its soul. Half of hip hop and rnb just sounds like pop and dance music. Down to the white run record labels and music television.

@Kichijoten Eminem is better then most rappers, in fact he is my top rapper easily.  You might not like him for what he is up to now, but he was a beast back in the day. And oh rap God just killed every other rapper claiming there some rap kings etc.
Eminem is arguably the best (I'd put Has and the underrated Andre 3000 next to him).

He's just a shit producer and needs to stop producing his stuff.
    Also, bring back Slim Shady.

There's plenty with soul, it's just the mainstream you have a beef with and that criticism can be levelled at all genres of music.

I'm still shocked no one talks about Paul Simon singlehandedly destroying World Music with the release of Graceland, typical white man move.
recorded under apartheid. quite controversial at the time and during its reissue few years back. http://www.theguardian.com/music/2012/apr/19/paul-simon-graceland-acclaim-outrage

led zep: pretty famous for their plagiarism. was it settled whether they lifted the stairway intro off that band? fun stuff. that said, they also have one of the best rhythm sections of all time. that also said, there's also all those maddening lord of the rings folk songs.

    carry on...
