Well, what *can* I play with it? When I took a look at it when it was new, it seemed completely irrelevant. I don't need a 5th device in my household that can play Spotify or Netflix.
Between this and a chromecast, unless you've been sucked well and truly into the awful hole that is itunes or have an iphone, get a chromecast simply because it has far more flexibility with what you can play.
You can pick an old one up for peanuts now.
Does it do anything that a dozen other devices don't do? Can I rent/buy films and TV shows from anywhere that is actually better than iTunes?

@Tonka I have the suspicion that might just be the reason why I have no idea what people do with all that shit, yeah. -

I have an atv2, got it free through some work loyalty points. I got it to replace a noisy media centre. I don't use it for any of its apple related bollocks cos I jailbroke it day 1 and stuck xbmc on there. It sees the shares on a headless Linux box in my garage which contains all my TV and movies.
I would like to use my chromecast as that will do 1080 but having it set up like it is now makes it easy for partner and son to use it for watching their stuff.
I will eventually replace it with a proper android tv box when one comes along that isn't shit. -

Registered 8 years agoAs someone who's internet isn't great (1-3mbs depending) is there a set top box or service that allows you to download the films or shows that you rent?
I think you can do this through iTunes and using the Apple TV to display your your Mac. But I'm not sure, or is there a service you can pause and allow to buffer?
I recently moved and the amount of blu Rays I have is getting way to much, thinking that a set top box may be the way to go with films. Like the new Jurassic park which I'm not overally fussed about buying but would still like to watch. -

Well, you get the shitty games through the new App Store, which is more important. IOW it's very likely we'll see some of the currently overlooked services like iPlayer and Lovefilm on there sooner rather than later.
Regardless I don't see the new ATV offers anything the existing one doesn't other than shitty games. -

FWIW I'm on a shit BT connection that is 2.8Mb at best and I regularly use Netflix and NowTV for content. They don't heavily buffer as far as I'm aware. -

Registered 15 years agoIt'll work fine, the only concession I have to make, at the shitty end of the broadband world, is not to try to play another video or have any downloads running simultaneously. But general surfing etc while watching is no problem. -

Registered 8 years ago@mothercruncher Thanks man. I streamed Jurassic world off the PSstore and it looked pretty decent ( seemed to stay at 3 bars in HD). A couple of moments of asset fragmentation, but otherwise entirely watchable. -

Registered 14 years agoNot bad at all really. I mean I'm sure there is so-and-so Android model made from tin foil and chicken wire for £1.50, but that's at least a half way decent price however you look at it.
No HDMI lead in the box though I noticed, FYI. -

"A TV experience
you’ve never experienced."
Who the fuck wrote that line?
" Bypass all those confusing buttons with a swipe of your thumb."
BUT I LIKE BUTTONS. And its got buttons right there on the remote. I can bloody see them!
"Voice. The most efficient interaction tool ever."
No it flipping well isn't. Not for mumbling muggins here. I've never had any speech recognition work with me ever. -

Its not a bad price really, and had 1st gen been priced that way I'd have possibly bought it, but now with all my smart TV, consoles and Firestick and Roku stick (shite, btw), all doing elements of the same thing, I wonder what place it has.
Seems to be the USP is accessing iTunes, when really if Apple wanted to take over the TV world they'd let other hardware access the store front -
@chopsen but it was such a burden -

Registered 15 years agoBe interested to see where the App thing goes. If specific channels start doing apps with great content and higher levels of integration, then it all gets quite interesting. -

It was priced that way, wasn't it? I bought the 2nd Gen Apple TV for $99 back in 2010. It has been a faithful XBMC unit for many years.

The only way this nbew one changes the games is if decent (and useful) apps appear for it. Plus, and I know a lot of you will think it silly, a decent UI and interaction that isn't based on fucking directional buttons is long overdue. Even Samsung have that on their TV remotes now too. Shame Amazon won't ever support it, but Netflix will do for now. Hopefully iPlayer and company won't be too far behind.
At work we just started porting some of our apps for TV this week, and it's quite interesting stuff. I wonder if Apple will let me release Dildo Face Slapathon 2K15 Lucky Dragon Edition? It uses the accelerometer in the remote like no other game has. -

I hope so - that's about the only thing that's missing before I can bin the shitty Virgin Media box bollocks UI I'm currently using. Which must be powered by a 68020 chip, given the responsiveness of the fucking thing. -
Was it? I coulda sworn early Apple TV was £200ish.

In fairness I bought mine in the US so it's possible the UK had gouging prices, but I don't remember that being the case. Not that anyone really bought one anyway.

Registered 14 years agoThe 1st gen Apple TV was around the £200 mark. Don't forget the first version was a big box which synced everything via iTunes to a HDD. If memory serves it was basically a low powered Mac.
Apple TV 2 which was the introduction of the current form factor and "streaming box" concept was about £100 I think, dropping to £60ish. -
No headphone socket on the remote?
Bummer.
