I picked this up on Switch a few days ago. Aside from the UI and controls being an absolute shambles (seriously, it's like the developer has never picked up a gamepad in their lives), I'm really digging it. I'm trying to avoid guides except for the absolute basics, because I like making my own mistakes in these kinds of games. But I knew enough to turn off the DLC dungeon, at least until I have a firm handle on things. |

Registered 7 years ago@Mola_Ram Haha! I made the same mistake! The Shambler is supposedly one of the hardest bosses in the game. I've never re-attempted it since the first pummelling I got.
I'm on to week 80 now. Absolutely loving it, despite the occasional squad wipe. Its got a bit easier now that I can get level 3 people turning up in the Stagecoach. Don't have to keep training up people from scratch. -

Registered 9 years agoI really love the Flagellant class. You can use an Antiquarian to direct more attacks to him, and really let loose when he's below 50% health. -

I've used the Grave Robber a lot, actually. Good times. -

Registered 9 years agoSo I'm a bit low on gold (my Antiquarian died). I've now started sending fresh recruits from the cart into dungeon runs, with no provisions, to grab as much stuff as possible. If they survive (usually through fleeing before the quest is finished), they get fired and replaced with new recruits.
...I'm a terrible person

Registered 9 years agoWell, I got scared and apparently massively overlevelled myself for the Necromancer fight. Two Crusaders spamming Holy Lance, Vestal with her mace, and a Man-at-Arms out front to take all the hits. It was trivial.
Maybe I'll try kill the hag now. -

I really should pay more attention to negative quirks, though. I got a new Antiquarian, only to realise that she had a little kleptomania problem. I got extra loot, which she then stole half of.

Registered 9 years agoI'm glad that it happened early on. I would not have liked to lose any of my level 2 or 3 guys to that thing.
Anyway, I have 3 Antiquarians to treasure-dive with now. They're usually fine with a Flagellant/Highwayman/Man at Arms + healer group. It's been good to finally be able to build up some resources. -

Registered 9 years agoYou can carry more gold, but the main benefit (as long as you get them to open things and activate curios) is that they find antiques that are worth a whole lot of money. Far more valuable than the regular treasures you get. -

Registered 17 years agoHow's the UI text on the Switch version? Docked vs, undocked? I have shockingly poor eyesight, and the UI looks minuscule to me.

Registered 13 years agoYeah I'm tempted too. But the only turn based games I've ever played are Steamworld Heist and Mario + Rabbids (which I've just finished, hence an interest in something new). Would I be hugely out of my depth in this? -

It's fine docked.
Undocked... well, it's markedly better than the Vita version owing to the larger screen, but the text could still be bigger. I'm fine with it, but if you have eyesight problems you might not be.

That being said, there's no time limit on the standard difficulty setting, and (as far as I can see) no way to get a Game Over. So if you're fine struggling for a little while, I'd say give it a go.

Registered 17 years agoThanks for the info - docked only for me then, should I go for it.
That said...
I just read in more detail about the Switch version's wonky controls (D-Pad + Stick + Face buttons just to move an item from inventory to a character? WUT?!) and that the Vita version was similarly plagued but that it got patched?
Sounds painful. Lovecraftian terror applied to a control scheme. -

Registered 9 years agoIt's pretty clunky, yeah. But I did get used to it after a few hours. It's a minor blemish on a gem of an experience.
If you're not going to play it on PC, then the Switch version is probably the one to get. -

Registered 17 years agoPC would seem natural, but with these turn based Rogue-likes it's nice to be able to play on the sofa while half watching something to be a little more sociable. Good for trips, too.
Is the DLC stuff worth getting up front? There's the Ancestral Wotsits pack with the side content and an extra character.
Either way I'll be waiting until next weekend, just so I can say I went one WHOLE month without buying a game.

Registered 9 years agoThe DLC is worth it, yes. But from what I've heard, you'd be better off not activating it (or at least the new dungeon part of it) until you've got a handle on the base game. You'll get murdered otherwise.
Thankfully though, all the extra content is in modules, so you can have the new class/extra buildings without having to deal with the dungeon. -

Last question: what I loved about Kingdom: New Lands was that its systems and world slowly unfurled before me as I got better and farther into the game. It was sometimes arcane, sometime obtuse, but fun to dig into and a few Steam forum visits yielded some interesting info and tactics.
Darkest Dungeon has a lot more randomness to it by the sounds of it - but does it have the same "ah-HAH!" moments when you figure stuff out, or is it more traditional RPG "fill this bar to kill that monster" sorta stuff?
Feel free to leave me in ignorance if it doesn't exactly map to your time with the game.

Registered 9 years agoIt's a game about party composition. So I suppose the "ah-HAH!" moments happen when you figure out combinations of party members and abilities that work particularly well together. There's tremendous depth there, and opportunity to experiment.
It's also a bit like Invisible Inc (and also XCOM) in a way, in that the game is at its most compelling when things go pear-shaped. There's always risk in sticking around (your guys could die, or go insane and then kill the rest of your party and then die), but the allure of quest rewards and shiny things is great. -

Registered 9 years agoAs far as lore goes, you can pick up journal pages around the place. But the real meat of the story (so far) is about your party members, and the terrible things that happen to them. -

Registered 7 years agoTook my first foray into the darkest dungeon last night. It started off well enough and I made it to the boss, but in the end I had to abandon the quest and only 1 of my level 6s survived.
It's quite different from the other dungeons. My biggest mistake was not taking enough bandages.

Registered 17 years agoStarted this on Switch today. It's going to take a good long while to understand how all of these different classes stack up with each other, against the bad guys, against my own ineptitude, etc. etc.

Not played handheld yet - the UI is TINY even on the TV, though. Ended up sitting forward to get closer. I guess once I know what everything is it won't be so tough to parse.
The controls on Switch are... esoteric. I think I'm better having not played the PC version though, as I'm getting on OK.
