Do what I did, get her one of her own so she has no excuse for taking yours! :) Then get Splatoon for you both so she doesn't complain you're neglecting her.

This is probably the best Metroidvania I've ever played, stunning world to explore, combat is brilliant and the characters are just gosh darned cute!

Ori is better than this, but it's still an excellent game.

I really liked this until it just got too difficult too quickly. Would love an easy option, just more health etc. I only got a far as the crystal mountain place where everything fires lasers and really want to see the rest of the game.

Never paid much attention to Ori except for the graphics. What makes it better? I have an Xbox gathering dust that could do with some games to play.

It's just almost perfect, it's bloody hard at times though so it will require patience.

It's all opinions, but Ori is nowhere near as good as Hollow Knight.

I don't even class Ori as a metroidvania, it's more of a platformer, and a frustrating and tedious one in places too. Personally I never completed Ori due to the unfair deaths and trial and error nature of the platforming.

I double dipped with Hollow Knight on my Switch though. This is as good as metroidvania games get

Ori Definitive Edition on sale on Xbox store at the moment so I've bought it and will judge for myself. :) Have played a few Metroidvanias like Axiom Verge but none have gripped me in the same way Hollow Knight has since, oh, Super Metroid maybe? Haven't played Cave Story yet, might take the plunge if it ever drops in price on the Switch. £26 when it's like £2 on Steam!

I didn't love cave story, never grabbed me. Shadow complex was amazing though.

Ori is a platformer... i dont agree with the trial and error deaths but it can be a bit confusing where you are meant to go so you can spend far too much time (i did) attempting to do a jump you don't have the abilities for yet.

I personally loved it so much i bought it twice :) - definitive and standard edition

    Opinions huh

I love Metroidvanias and wouldn't even put Ori in the top 10 of the genre. Like others have said, there's far too many frustrating trial and error sections that sour it. Lovely artstyle though.

Arhkam Asylum is a definite top 3 Metroidvania for me. Most I've played like Axiom Verge are too slavish, but AA kept the core of the subgenre, expanded and then perfected it IMO. Until now at least. HK is incredible.

++ for Shadow Complex. I think that was pretty much my first "Metroidvania", back on the 360. Really enjoyed it.

Hollow Knight is ace. Love how it adds Dark Souls elements into the mix. It is so tense when you unlock a new area, and you have no idea where the next "bonfire" is going to be...

Yeah, it's a little heavy on backtracking would be my main criticism so far. I've killed a few bosses so far and am enjoying it quite a lot.

I played about 3 hours so far and am completely lost :( i love the aesthetic and the combat but i hate having to try and remember where i have and have not been (i have maps for the first few areas but the problem is trying to remember what is blocking my path).
  • Deleted user 15 June 2018 17:24:09
I bought something from the shop that seems to be a marker of some sort, one red and one blue, but haven't used it yet. Dunno if that allows you to drop pins on the map maybe?

Is there a Metroidvania that ever solved this problem? Backtracking is part of the genre but I agree, it's a pain to go all the way to the end of a dozen paths and find that gate that you forgot about blocking you.

I think they drop the markers as you hit certain points such as a stag station or a bench

@GarlVinland double tap the map button and you can hit a to drop one down as a marker to remember to come back later. As you progress you'll unlock different markers.

There is a really fucking annoying thing this does on switch, when you put the map away jump doesn't work for a second after. Will try it on the joycons to see if it happens there but on the pro controller I can recreate it all time time. It's a pain in the ass to someone who checks the map constantly like I do. You can still walk forward though which has caused me a fair few health points but at least the spikes aren't one hit kills.

Yeah me too, I thought it might have just been me being a bit gentle on the button. Lots of people saying it's input lag but only seems to be the jump button for me.

I like the game. A lot. The art, the mechanics, the atmosphere.

But bloody hell, the backtracking is killing me. Maybe I am missing obvious markers where to continue, but 90% of my time with this game is running down paths I ran around a dozen times already.

Maybe I need something like a suggested route through the game (not a walkthrough), because currently I find it a bit frustrating.

    @UncleLou

Are you buying the maps? Becuase although I am getting the same fatigue as you I have found checking the maps for areas I havenít been too seem to elivatr the issue, coupled woth a charm that lets me know where I am on the map it has helped a lot.

Having said that I am constantly lost lol

@Graxlar_v3 I am, yes! But right now I am in an area I've combed through a dozen times, and I can't find the map seller.

And there's the two dozen (temporary) dead ends where I might be able to continue (or not) with one of the new abilities. Can I bloody remember which part on the map which shows a little "gap" might be accessible now that I have a new ability I had no idea I would get? Can I fuck. I need to (re)visit every single spot.

Maybe this sort of Metroidvania isn't for me. :-/

Sounds infuriating - I had similar issues with Axiom Verge, which eventually stopped me playing.

i never finished axiom verge.. i really should because i am fairly far in but i got lost and knowing which map i should be on is an absolute pain.

The stag system is kinda helpful in hollow knight as it is basically a fast travel system.
