Doctor Strange had some good visual ideas and was pretty creative. At the same time the origin story was pretty standard, and it suffered from having a fairly lacklustre villain presence and it just felt very safe, ultimately.

Though it was good to see a big bad defeated with cunning rather than pure brawn too.

It's firmly in the B rank for me.

I'm looking forward to Black Widow more than most of the announced marvel films, the exception being Love and Thunder.

Derrickson wanted Strange 2 to be more dark and horror-focused, he was pretty clear about it. And Kevin Feige shot him down immediately stating that it will be more pg-13 like it's predecessor.

It's a shame really because in my opinion Marvel movies are at their best when their filmmakers stray away from the formula and are allowed to put their own stamp on it (GOTG, CAP2&3, Spiderman, Iron Man 3).

Black Widow look a bit run-of-the-mill if I'm being honest. Nothing particularly stands out. I hope it's not a sign of things to come from phase 4.

Absolutely, the Marvel films are the best when a director is allowed / able to synthesise their own style into the wider universe.

With Black Widow, I kind of agree it doesn't look amazing but Scarlett Johansson has been consistently great in the role. If it had been some other character and / or actor I'd be less interested.

Difficult to say what it was. Tone? Marvel don’t really do R rated films now so he must have known this when he signed up. Having Scarlett Witch in? He must have also known this too.

Ours supposed to tie in directly to the WandaVision series. Perhaps there was too much “it had to have this” involved. Or he did want to go dark and Disney said no.

Maybe get the guy who directed Mandy to have a good at it.

I dont think it needs to be "dark" or R rated but this is the one character who they can truly go wild with.

He's had battles in the sun, fought God, traversed multiple dimensions in the comics.

I was hoping they were going to go that route but they played it safe with Mads and the angry space cloud.

Yes money. Again money. It's fucking Marvney so always money obviously.

My point was more that you can't recruit from an endless talent pool, when they are a factory. The talent pool isn't endless. There's only so many indie directors who will sell out for a movie factory and if Disney keep sacking them for "creative differences", their talent pool will shrink as a result.

I doubt this all had sustainability when you're talking commercialising it even more with TV.

Why not just let the nutcase who directed Mandy carry on with his nutcase stuff for a while, rather than screwing up his filmography with Thor Thixty Four.

Derrickson originally signed up to the sequel because Feige/Marvel had agreed to take a darker turn with it, like the books had explored that Derrickson enjoyed. He mentioned it publicly when it was all first announced.

John Campia made a good point. You get someone in to decorate your house. You want them to bring their experience, talent etc but it’s still your house and they have to do it the way you want it. You are just hiring the person to do a job for you. If it turns out you don’t like what this person is doing then you get rid.

As regards how long they can sustain it with constant “creative differences” is an interesting point. Maybe they did promise him a lot more freedom and suddenly got cold feet. Having to tie in TV series as well as all the films just seems a tad excessive. But I suppose if you enjoy the Marvel films (like I do) then you’ll want Disney+ and the like.

I think we’re only getting two Marvel Studios films this year(?). Black Widow and Eternals. I’m a lot more curious how Sony’s Morbius (trailer next week) and Venom 2 turn out. Disney are releasing New Mutants under Fox banner, so if it flops then it’s not really them.

He’s staying on as EP, so it’s obviously not a huge falling out.

They’ve only separated with about 3 directors over the span of 22 films. That’sa lot better than the typical rate directors drop out of franchises/properties.

More directors have dropped out of the Uncharted film and they haven’t filmed a second of it.

His EP credit will probably still stick because his name can't be removed.

Anyway, it's just another statistic for the Modern Hollywood Blockbusters Are Shit sheet.

Until they showed his CG face I was with you.

It's a weird mix of universes though - Keaton from Homecoming, but a shot of Raimi's Spider-man suit taken from the PS4 game as graffiti on the wall with "murderer" written across it, which is likely reference to Far From Home.

Lots of films have been shot here doubling as New York. First remember hearing about this going on when they used Canal Street in the Jude Law remake of Alfie.

Anyhow, this looks kind of shit. Probably will be. Will is get anywhere near close to Venom's $856.1 million(!!) box-office? Maybe.

And no. It's not tracking at anything at the moment :-)

    I don’t believe it is, it’s Sony’s mixed universe.
