So. I finally decide to bite the bullet. A 17" Imac G5 - with superdrive is mine. From the local PC World store.

Only... I get home with a new box of loveliness to find that Apple has upgraded the G5 line. The SAME FRICKIN DAY.

    So I've got a 1.8/256/80gb 17" model.

And yesterday, I could have bought a 2.0/512/160 with built in airport express.

    /IS NOT HAPPY.

Sadly the method by which I obtained it means I cannot simply return it for a refund. I had a local company buy it as payment for some work, and they used their account with PC World. Gah !!!

Just remember the PCWorld advert, with that jackbooted salesman beating down your hopes, dreams and quest for good value ;)

    Unlucky!

"But always -- do not forget this, Winston -- always there will be the intoxication of power, constantly increasing and constantly growing subtler. Always, at every moment, there will be the thrill of victory, the sensation of trampling on an enemy who is helpless. If you want a picture of the future, imagine a boot stamping on a human face -- for ever.' "

    Umm, you're fucked.

If you had bought from apple, either directly or in store, you could have returned it, or got some cash off. PC World don't offer this as a service. I know.

If you got it from the business section, the best course might be to ring the business advisor guy who put the sale through, and have a chat to him. The business monkeys have a bit more freedom to do refunds, etc. If they know them as a regular customer they might do them a favour.

PC World really aint the best place to buy a Mac at the best of times; much better product knowledge at Mac stores.

/awaits thread on Longhorn and the new way of organising files on the HDD

Wait that was scrapped to make a release this decade by the sounds of it

At least they're doing the whole relational index file search thingy so we can all create virtual directores and find our files incredibly quickly.

    /looks at Tiger's features

    D'oh!

Do you actually use the search facility tho?

I just tend to file stuff properly and know where to look without searching.

Is there much difference between Spotlight and MSN Desktop search for Windows? I have been using the MSN beta for a while and it seems pretty good.

Of course, you're all right. (cheers tho!)

However, upgrading their machines like a week after a major OS release (when there'll have been plenty folk helpfully emptying their shelves of old stock) smacks of cynisism at best. Bastard bastards at worst!

I could get a refund I guess. And return it under the satisfaction guarantee thing.

But... it's just so... damn... gorgeous....

    Grrrrr.

    /mad mode back on.

Hmm. I checked. There's no dealie for business. And a 15 percent restocking fee...

I'm gonna be stuck with it.

Still - since I sold the ibook - I had a powerbook for a while then a G4 800 - which seemed quite nippy really. I'll just have to live with it. (Once I get tiger installed anyway)

I've already got the wee Dlink bluetooth usb thing, and I don't particularly want wireless. I'll get some RAM and then go huff in the corner....

(of course, it's all your fault anyway, Otto - your thread got me thinking 'bout it ! ;o) )

God, that sucketh indeed, colin. :(

Very unhelpful of everyone to say "you shouldn't have bought from those shifty nazi scumbags at PC World" but... they're right. :(

ssu - Spotlight is one of those things that you don't appreciate for what they offer until you have it. I'm also a reasonably fanatical filer and keep things very well organised (on my computer at least, not necessarily in the rest of my life). But the great thing about Spotlight is that it will show stuff up that might have been misfiled, misnamed, forgotten about, and it's all instant.

Last night for instance I found a new use for it. An installation in OSX is usually fairly straightforward, single package direct to the Applications folder, but sometimes they'll stick stuff in the library folder or the preferences folder or whatever. I was uninstalling my scanner drivers before installing the Tiger update - simply typed 'Epson' into spotlight and instantly could see everywhere that I'd put anything relating to Epson, categorised, so I could get rid of all of it just like that.

While I'm on a roll, another great thing I spotted - the Epson drivers are pretty shite, but they're a bit more 'pro' than Image Capture (part of OSX) so I use them for scanning my negs. It's a pain to use for copying or faxing, though - the Epson control centre is a buggy horrible piece of crap. So I've just created a new Automator script - dead straightforward, even my MiL could do it: capture -> print (paper or fax). I know I know it's dead basic but I just really like the flexibility combined with the ease of use.

I'd do that. It's worth waiting a couple of weeks for something that will be a good deal more future proof.
