yes, another thread asking for advice

a friend is after a gaming laptop for their son for xmas - 500-700 price range - and would want to get from a 'known' site

would this be capable of running stuff well? if not, any advice on what we should be looking for?

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/MSI-Graphics-Dedicated-Geforce-Warranty/dp/B017JRLBTU/ref=sr_1_32?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1447868495&sr=1-32&keywords=gaming+laptop

    cheers

Looks like it is one of these: http://www.notebookcheck.net/MSI-GP60-2PEi585-Notebook-Review.118846.0.html

So it should run things OK on medium settings, but isn't going to set the world alight.

Gaming laptops are considerably more expensive than desktops, and obviously do not provide an upgrade path (short of memory and SSD).

A small form factor PC with an Nvidia card, and a (now cheaper) Nvidia Shield tablet may provide a better solution.

aye, i know they're limited by budget and the fact he's got his heart set on a laptop...

for the price, is it an acceptable solution, that's basically the question....

@drhcnip This Asus is a touch over budget but it'll probably be the best performer you'll get for that price range. It still won't be able to play all modern games at 1080p/60 but you should get decent performance by dropping res or details.

Here are some average FPS counts from various games for the 960M GPU (they used different laptops but it shouldn't make a huge difference).

It's basically the same as the first one. 940m isn't going to be a lot of use for much, and it's only just scraping in at minimum spec for almost all modern aaa games.
aye they all look fairly similar including the third one i found....looks to me as if that's what they're looking at in that price range...

trying to convince them to go for a pc....for many reasons....

yep...looking at it, i'll send them the links to the three....the 940m, that 950m and the one marmite suggested as a top choice if they can stretch to it...

as i see it, they were going off to pc world to be screwed for one of theirs so anythings got to be better than that....;)

    thanks again

As for the 950m it's a decent enough card to have on a budget. Any game from 2014 and this year will run med/high settings depending on what fps you're after.

Worth noting that the HUKD one is German and comes without an OS.

I've a similar question with an even tighter budget. I am in the market for a cheap laptop/netbook (ideally less than £350!), primarily for word processing, streaming and browsing.

However I'm hoping that whatever I buy might also be able to handle some of the smaller/indie games that I can't get on console. Is this at all realistic?... To say, run a game like Superhot at that price?

Its going to depend on the game, its as simple as that really. Your not going to know until you try it. Even small indie games can be demanding.

Even pretty old games can run like a dog on non gaming / internal GPU's, thats just the way it is.

In the end if you want to play super simplistic graphical games like Minecraft and Hearthstone then you will probably be OK.

@macksed I'm umming and aahing about selling my laptop for around that price. It's a 3rd gen i7 with dedicated AMD graphics and plays 360/PS3 level stuff on med/high as a general rule. If you're interested let me know, but fair warning, sale greatly depends on whether or not I can persuade Mrs Ork that I need a new machine :)

@BigOrkWaaagh ooh, yes that does sound interesting! Hadn't even given second hand any though tbh.

@SwissTony1994 thanks for the response! Just reaffirms the fact that I don't have a clue.

My local John Lewis has this to clear for 240, but the guy in there said there's no point trying to play anything without an i5 :'(

As stated previously you would be OK with something like Minecraft on that for sure. Maybe games like Hotline Miami, Escapist etc. but anything more than that and you are going to struggle.
