The first episode was made available on the SYFY website last night. Can't watch it yet but have high hopes as the books are fuppin awesome. Unfortunately the streaming locations are all blocked outside the US but you can just putlocker it. Edited by El_MUERkO at 17:19:37 23-11-2015 |

Registered 11 years ago@El_MUERkO *ahem* Started the download of it this morning. Never read the books, not sure if I've caught any mention of it before now, but it's from SyFy and seems to actually be proper SciFi, so with their recent track record I'm willing to give it a go. -
The books are great, part Serenity, part Star Wars, pulpy, cheesey, fun Sci-Fi! -

Registered 5 years agoJust making my way through the third book in the series and going by the source material this could really fill that Firefly/BSG shaped hole in tv.
The cast seem pretty well chosen too -

Another vote for 'the books are fuppin' awesome here' (despite Jim managing to be everywhere!) -
One of the writers said on Twitter that the test audiences rated each episode higher than the last and I thought the first episode was a solid 6/10 with moments of 'OOOoooooooooo'. Hopefully they haven't overcooked it. -

I think not. The books have a lot of surprise moments that would be spoilerific.
If they're doing a season per book, which I believe is the case, then post season book-to-show comparisons would be fine but during the season they may prick with the timeline or change things. -

While I understand the need to avoid spoilers and people going"ooh, the books are soo much better!" Why do people who say things like you just did sound so much like you hate and fear books?
sooo.. before we go any further.. book wankery allowed in here?
He, and I just saw you've read the books.
Peculiar

Dark Matter is the cheap show, though I like it, hope it goes from strength to strength
THat was decent enough to keep watching. At least it doesn't look as cheap and nasty as the show about the amnesiac crew.
Book still wins though; the tone counts for a lot and that won't translate at all.
Not sure why Avasarala is in the show yet though -

Registered 14 years ago@creepiest-lizard well having seen the train-wrecks in the Game of Thrones threads i thought it best to get the issue out of the way as early as possible in here before someone puts their foot in it by going "can't wait until moment xyz from the books" then the inevitable response of "hey assface, thanks for ruining the tv show" and then 6 pages of dross over bookwankery, tv spoiling and so on... and i didn't want to be that guy
.
I thought the show was good enough to warrant viewing the next few episodes to see how it progresses. As ever it's somewhat strange to see the characters in comparison to how you've imagined them - for some reason i always imagined holden as a laurence fishburne-alikey.
Plot-wise I thought that it probably tried to introduce too many elements and too briefly for a first episode (i.e why avasarala is involved already). I would have almost preferred they focussed on holden and the canterbury for this episode, then brought in Miller next week

Registered 12 years agoSaw up to Ep. 3 last night. Loving it interesting plot, mostly strong cast and it's got a real blade runner vibe going on. Even the science bits seem to make sense (so far). -

I really really loved Ep. 4. I was enjoying it up until then of course, but it was 4 that really drew me in mostly because there were more scenes with proper spaceships doing proper spaceship things.

Registered 16 years agoHOLY CRAP did SYFY blow their entire years budget on this, watched all 4 and so far its great, looks terrific, like battlestar terrific, and the plot is suitably labyrinthine, characters are ok, and they can even act a bit (for syfy)
Loving the subplots, wondering if they can maintain the quality.

I'm about 1/4 of the way through the first book. The show is keeping to the main arc of the story so far, but there are quite a few plot differences, particularly with the group in the life boat. -

Just watched Ep 5. The name of the ship, the Rocinante made me chuckle, wonder if the writers are Rush fans.
