Wasn't sure whether to post this in the Netflix thread or here, but I thought here might be better to get some other peoples take on the show - I've not read the books, yet.

I was recommended to watch it and am nearing the end of Season 2, just finished s2 ep8 'Pyre' - I've nearly gave up after the first 4/5 episodes of season 1, something just wasn't clicking, but I am damn glad I stuck with it. It's great viewing. Maybe not as good as the books but I'll get to those once I've finished the second season.

It does sometimes feel like they are talking in rhymes, when a few simple lines might actually diffuse the situation, but then we'd have no drama.

Anyway, the short version is that I'm enjoying it, minus a few small niggles.

It's good but yes, the books much, much better. Mostly because they adhere very strongly to actual physics and use that in very interesting ways - especially in the third book, which you'll get to see in the second half of series 3. The series does stay somewhat true to this but the usual excuses about making things exciting for television mean they've done some stupid stuff (like shorten travel times, or the sequence where Alex slingshots around planets to get to Ganymede stealthily towards the end of series 2).

I steamed through the entire series of books to date throughout December and they immediately became one of my most favourite reads ever.

This probably belongs in the book thread (if it exists) but if I loved the first 2 and hated/was bored to death by Abaddon's Gate is it worth reading the other books?

@Scimarad they're all good, although personally l loved Abaddon's Gate (it was the commitment to physics that I referenced in my comment above) so maybe I'm not the one to listen to.

@Scimarad I also don't have any particular memories of Abaddon's Gate and Cibola Burn, but I liked the book after those (Nemesis Games) a whole lot (somewhat unexpectedly).

We don't need no goddamn book thread. All wankers welcome here. I played the expanse board game last week. It was ok. A sort of faction led, planetary influence game. Nice photos of characters from the show on the cards.

Have they released just on episode or the whole season?

If it's the former, I think I'll wait a few weeks and binge on 3 or 4 at once :)

Think it'll be weekly as it's only the one ep from Syfy last night.

Pretty much jumped right into it, and kinda glad I rewatched the S2 finale to bring me back up to speed.

I'm about half way through S2; just a general question really....S1 was about half of book 1 IIRC, so does S2 continue that book and S3 the first half of book 2?

I read Leviathan Wakes ages ago and I fancy a bit of SF so thought about picking up that and Caliban's War...just wondered where it all lines up again the TV series. I didn't want to dig into things online and hit spoilers.

The core plot line is pretty much identical between the books and the TV. A couple of the sub-plots separate out, or have been trimmed.

@Nemesis S2 was the rest of book 1 and the first half of book 2. Iím hoping that S3 will include elements of book 3 (and it should do - canít imagine another series where they spin out half of a book again).

After the amazing job of high-G control layout they did on the Rocinante, anyone else stare in disbelief at the arm-outstretched joystick thrust controller on the 6-G racing yacht? They went to the trouble of mounting the two seats on gimbals, so the passenger can be turned whichever way is best to cope with maneuvres, but then fuck up the ability to keep control when your arm would be pinned to the rest and you'd struggle to lift your fingers.

@YenRug Fair point. They do get a lot more right than on other shows to be fair. I liked that they had gimbals in the first place and didn't need to spell out what they were for.

Case in point is Lost in Space. Not only is it shite but stare aghast at all that production value go to waste on nonsense science and stupid characters.

Boooo, apparently "To End On Syfy With Season 3". Really annoying, best sci-fi on TV for bloody ages. There's a chance someone else might pick it up.
