I love how Trump is going to make peace with NK just to spite Obama.

While doing his best to destroy it with its 'allies' (what does that even mean nowadays).

So it's just a commitment to work towards denuclearisation.

    Which is nothing really.

If they can keep the talks going it could produce something worthwhile, but I just don't think Trump has the patience for anything beyond a 2-day summit.

The Iran deal, by contrast, took *years* of negotiation.

Yeah, the whole text reads essentially like "we're doing our best to reach X" and "we'll talk more", without providing even the slightest bit of detail on who does what exactly and when.

I know Trump will sell this as a victory over Obama etc. but in reality this is a HUGE win for NK. They're now an accepted player on the world stage. Mission accomplished and it'll further cement Kim's position domestically.

Unless the US are pulling some major concessions out of NK (which they'll actually stick to, far from certain based on past history) to me it looks like the US basically bent over internationally to appease domestically (mid terms, 2020).

I enjoyed how dumb and illerate he sounded in his "how are you feeling" response compated to Jong-Uns response.

Still - the dumb Trump supporters will be blindly lapping this shit up - which is highly depressing.

Ha, yeah, my wife suggested this morning that if NK did scrap their nuclear programme, and bring stability to the region, Kim would be far more deserving of a peace prize than Trump!

As expected though... A load of nothing bar some nice photos. Which was all he wanted really.

    Yeah, it's comedy gold ("DE-NOOKIN").

And then I realise, this isn't Saturday Night Live, but reality.

He's also just put into question the 'war games' in South Korea i.e. the joint military exercises.

Talking about how expensive it is ("I know a lot about planes! Flying bombers from Guam and drop bombs and fly back? That's like 6 hours!") and the South not pulling their weight financially (!).

The praise he's heaping on Kim/NK is pretty disgusting to be frank.

As an ally you really wonder whose side this guy is on (rhetorical question it's so bleeding obvious).

This whole thing feels like they have used Trump's ego to give the impression it's all about him but in reality it's all about recognising NK as a legitimate world player that now has to be listened and given respect which previous presidents were wary to do. Trump has been played so badly, as now he's given them the time of day they'll always be making up a fuss.

For sure. When asked about the agreed statement they signed, he actually had to read from it to answer the question. Complete puppet.

    That press conference:

"I don't have to verify it because I have one of the great memories of all time, so I don't have to. Ok. Okay?"

That's why he loses track of every sentence he starts about half way through I guess.

CNN now dissecting this bizarre press conference which is a lot more interesting. It's a shame that his base will never expose themselves to it.

As a result, it all feels a bit like a pointless echo chamber exercise unfortunately. Information age eh.

I for one look forward to seeing how a a vague agreement to do good stuff between two unreliable parties who have a very lose relationship to reality and often renege on agreements turns out.

I am not sure I could come up with a worse matching than this for an ability to negotiate anything.

Here's the important bit. I highlighted the things that really matter to Trump

Having acknowledged that the U.S.–DPRK summit—the first in history—was an epochal event of great significance in overcoming decades of tensions and hostilities between the two countries and for the opening up of a new future, President Trump and Chairman Kim Jong Un commit to implement the stipulations in this joint statement fully and expeditiously.

I kinda love how NK couldnt even be bothered to name a person who will be in charge of the talks, instead Pompous will have talks with someone of equal standing (the cleaner).

C'mon a brave former SAS filing boy like him should be able to get himself out of a mission impossible because you know, he was in the SAS. He's seen things...

Davis setting up a crossfire either side of a road with his men shooting at each other is a wonderful metaphor for the current climate.

Progress with NK is good, the last 20 years got very little achieved so that approach was hardly a success.

However this has all the hallmarks of Trump diplomacy. Flashy, headline grabbing and fuck all substance.

It is good that they are not threatening each other over Twitter. I very much doubt that they are going to achieve a peace treaty or complete denuclearisation or whatever they say they want, but I will settle for jaw-jaw over war-war.
