Just been reading the articles popping up with the latest Xbox pictures. Looking at the remote control it has the windows media center button toward teh bottom of the controller. Now i assume that this is just for the media link (or what ever it was called) where you coulds stream media from Windows Media Center PC's, But with the cost of TV cars now it i could see Msoft selling an add on and turing it into a PVR. When the PS2 came out it was a fairly (after the first couple price drops) resonably priced DVD player. It was after this that (maybe not becuase of) DVD really started to take off in popularity (in a mass market way). Could the X360 do the same for digital video/PVR's. I know that SKY+ has caused a huge leap forward in popularity but this could be another big step. AS for the remoteI can read most of the button labels but some are too blurred Abotu the direction keys i can read Back, title and DVD menu but can anybody read the over two or the labels below the ABXY buttons or the media centre start button |

Registered 18 years agowell, yea, it will have quite a few features, i think; but get one thing straight- i really don't think it will be able to record itself- microsoft want the pc as the centre of media around the home.
it will probably
- stream movies music(def WMV, MS-DVR, etc, hopefully Divx, Xvid)(def mp3 and wma, not m4a)
- be able to schedule recording, give access to the full panolopy of media centre stuff
- surf the web (MS have web tv 2 atm, and with better controls and HDTV, this should be pretty decent)
- get on messenger, with video and audio
- be able to use ms phones and PDAs as remotes.
- have wifi built in
this is what we should be able to expect- these are all actually pretty easy for any modern console to do. the xbox will do these at the mo, with addons. the issue is what surprises MS has in store, above and beyond these... -
well i hope it does bridge the gap between media centers and consoles. Im trying to decide wether t build myself a media center, but why bother.. the next xbox will have this capability builtin and play games. Sounds like a winner.
So thats that decided.. no Philips Streamium for me. -

Registered 18 years agoI'm just fucking stoked they did the sensible thing and included a Power button on the remote! No more getting out of a warm bed! -

Registered 18 years agoYea, glad to see the power button. About time! -
xbox 360 also has an internal clock, i think the fire hazzard warning made microsoft rethink the "it should always be turned on" motto they had to begin with.
the media function of the xbox 360 is crippled out of the box, you really need either a hard-disc OR a windows media centre enabled PC to make the most out of it. -

Registered 20 years agoA power button and a battery backed clock? Wow, they really have listened! I'm speechless!
Still, a battery backup isn't a fix for everything. Right now I go through periods of not using my dreamcast for a month or two, and when I go back I have to reset the clock. The xbox doesn't suffer from that since, although I may not use it for that length of time, I do leave it plugged in (because I have to). -

Registered 20 years agoPossibly the most interesting feature seems to be the removable hard drive. I wonder will they go the whole hog and make it a removable media player? Now that would be a very nice feature. (Prolly too expensive though) -

whats the significance of having an internal clock? -

Registered 20 years agoHe means a battery-backed internal clock, as opposed to the capacitor-backed internal clock the current xbox has. Having the latter means that if you unplug the box for more than about five minutes or so it goes 'Uh, what? Where am I? What year is it?' like some slightly dimwitted Dr Who. -
^ as he said.
Microsoft are pretty bullish when they enter a market, but the reason they are so successfull is because they learn from mistakes. -

Well if you didn't have one you'd not know when it was time for bed.

So PGR knows what time it is and can adjust the daylight during your races. Oh wait, they removed that from MSR.
/kicks stupid BC for taking out inspired feature.
We can only hope they put it back in PGR3 in order to show off the cheap (ish) real time lighting you can do with the current state of the art (for now I'm assuming a dual core 3GHz Pentium with the graphics card either ATi and nVidia are going to release by year end as what will probably be the power of the next gen on launch. So today's PC++ and so whatever we are seeing today in the PC dev scene is probably on with a bit of scaling back due to not using 2GB of RAM for system and GPU in any next gen to save cost) and have some impressive longer races where the Sun just breaks the horizon and the car lights go off.

Registered 17 years agoSo anyone got any inside information or speculative nonesense about how the wireless controllers are going to work?
I'm curious about two things:
a) headset & controller data is going to be data intensive so it's going to have to be a fast connection, right?
b) how about batteries? some sort of dedicated battery or AAs? -

No, he was saying that the next gen consoles will be equivalentish to a PC with a dual core pentium and next gen GPU. -
I still think that microsoft will bring out an online music service (hence the MTV launch) that'll also let you play your downloaded music in the games, unlike the current system where developers have to include this feature it will be integral to the Xbox...
