I lugged my Asus around with a leather file briefcase, personally. I heard the Razer tactical pro backpack is good if you want to look like a twat .

Got my Asus on Saturday. Pretty well impressed with it. Feels a lot lighter than my previous msi and it's whisper quiet even under a good work out.

I had some weird graphic issues with horizon 3 but once I updated the drivers that all went.

If anyone sees a decent laptop in the sales, feel free to post a link! :o)

I say decent, but I don't mean 'gaming decent'. I've got about 300-400 to spend, so being realistic. All I'm really after is something that will be quicker on the internet than my current Asus X551m (the shittest laptop I have ever had, by the way), which can't even handle more than three tabs without having a shit fit, and a bit of really, really light gaming. Mainly of emulators and older Steam titles (think Dark Forces, Warcraft III) and, if I can, the latest FM on it (but again not expecting amazing performance from that). I had been hoping for a decent sale on Dell, but nothing thus far.

I do need a tablet as well, only a basic one, so have been thinking of getting one of the Yogas to save money overall. But spec looks like it takes a real hammering for the convenience, which I understand.

@ibenam would that still run older games through Steam?

Thanks. The write up makes it sound like it runs MS desktop software and apps....only. Not any desktop software.

I'll have a look at one of those.

Considering one of these two laptops, as they're in my budget and I can't find a Surface Pro anywhere near budget.

Not sure what would be the better option though - slower processor with 4gb dedicated graphics (Dell) versus
faster A12 processor with integrated (HP)

Or even this one (same processor as Dell but no integrated graphics, saving 150 it seems)

    This one here

Not sure about the specs as I don't know AMD laptop processors at all, but my 2 cents is that the low resolution will piss you off pretty swiftly on a 15" screen when web browsing.

I'd be tempted by the 1080p screen.

Right then, I need a laptop!

Quite keen to get a hybrid type thing, but keen to hear feedback. Generally would only be surfing the web, the odd bit of creative suite, some games but nothing demanding.

    Currently considering:

    Surface Pro 4 - i5
    Lenovo Miix 510 - http://www3.lenovo.com/gb/en/laptops/ideapad/miix-series/Lenovo-Miix-510/p/88EMMX50735
    Acer Switch
    Lenovo Yoga 710 - http://www3.lenovo.com/gb/en/laptops/yoga/700-series/Lenovo-YOGA-710-11IKB/p/88YG7000773
    Lenovo IdeaPad 510s - http://www3.lenovo.com/gb/en/laptops/ideapad/500-series/Lenovo-IdeaPad-510S-14IKB/p/88IP50S0760?IPromoID=LEN643399

800 is absolute maximum budget. I've also seem some Medion ones that out-spec most of the above for ludicriously cheap prices, but am sceptical.

I have the 14" version of that Yoga 710 and no issues with it. The only thing that might bug you is the screen is super reflective, and probably not the brightest but i don't use it outside.

Also the 14" came with a 940M so i can do some light gaming on it when i'm on holiday.

I would love to get the one with the 940M but is out of my range. I would probably get the 14 inch one though. No issues with bloatware? That's only thing that concerns me about Lenovo.

Fuck bloatware, did a full wipe and reinstall of windows, and just grabbed the drivers i actually wanted from the Lenovo site.

Pretty much did that on day 1 though so unfortunately couldn't tell you how bad the machine was out of the box!

After a laptop for the other half before she goes to Uni for a few years but I've no idea what to look for brand-wise (and I'm unsure whether it even matters).

All I'm after is one with an 8GB RAM, some form of SSD and an i5 processor - can't find anything for less than 500 from the usual sites (NewEgg, eBuyer etc).

Any advice or recommendations would be appreciated, thanks.

Always been a Surface customer since they've been out, and my Surface Pro 3 is getting a bit old now. This is for business use, so it needs to be fast for excel, not civ :)

What's the thoughts behind a 4k laptop these days? Any standouts? Quite like the look of the HP Elitebook 850, mostly because I have an ultraslim dock, but that's not to say I'd consider others.

Is it worth waiting a little longer for the new AMD chips?

Got a lenovo c330 chromebook just to fill out work related shit. It's a lot better than I thought it was going to be, and for the price ($180) it's also a bargain. It runs android apps as well, has the play store installed and it's all in all pretty capable compared to what little I expected. Can even play pubg on it.

Would 4k on such a small screen give you back enough at 15.6" for the cost on money and computation (i.e. battery)? It wouldn't for me but I kinda should get glasses so ...maybe for you? Have you seen/used a 4k laptop that made you think that this is the upgrade worth paying for?

I would wholly agree in questioning why you need a 4K screen.

If it's to impress clients and present content on the laptop screen, fair enough I suppose, but the general consensus is that 4K screens are completely unnecessary on a small laptop screen, whilst also being an unnecessary drain on the battery.

I have to admit, I really like the 2560 x 1600 screen on my MacBook Pro, allowing a little extra clarity here and there, but then the MacBooks are stupidly efficient when it comes to the OS and battery. Really, 1080p is more than good enough for any 13" laptop.

I haven't looked at buying a 15" laptop in a while, but I know a lot of manufacturers are pushing 4K screens now, unfortunately. If possible I'd try and get one with a screen greater than 1080p resolution, but less than 4K, if you value battery life at all.

The only 'plus' for a 4k was better clarity on text etc over a lower res screen. I would need to increase font size but I reasoned it would be smoother.

    I think the 4k screen is 15" not 13"

HMRC has kindly saved me some money over the past year and I've been on the look out for replacing my Surface Pro 4 with something that can play some of the PC game pass titles at something higher than 2 frames per second.

I'll take a look at the reviews of the new surface lineup when their actually out in the wild but does anyone have any other suggestions?

It needs to do Excel, web browsing, learn some coding (Python/SQL) and play some games please.
