Spent the morning browsing all things retro and realised I've never owned a GBA. Think I might get an SP. Yes I know I can emulate/use a DS etc but nothing beats the real thing.

Well worth getting. Its ridiculous just how many good games there are on the GBA. The tech always impressed me at the time as well.

The SP's over here had a crappy front lit screen. There was a revision with a proper backlit screen in the US. If you can get the backlit one go for that. If not A DS lite is the best option, the front lit screen is shit. I prefer just playing them on retropie these days though tbh.

    Comparison video here

I remember having an original GBA with a backlight mod, an SP and a micro. I loved handhelds.

Anyway this is escalating fast, currently looking at this :
    https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.co.uk%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F183201805363

Main concern is applying the artwork which I will be terrible at.

Yeah I noticed there was 2 models. The price difference is pretty big though. The 101s I've seen on eBay are going for £100+ The crappier ones are £30. I'm not adverse to paying £100 + but when it's for older kit I run the risk of it being fucked so I'd rather waste £30 over the higher number. If you dig me?

That's cool. Too big for me. Handhelds I can hide from the wife and kids.

I'd be really interested in how that is if you get it. Really want a bar top arcade but my DIY skills are about on par with a blind monkey. In fact the monkey may have the edge.

I understand, but honestly, the screen is really bad. It only got praised at the time because we were coming from the completely unlit original GBA. Personally I'd rather not have one than buy one of those. If I was buying something now to play GBA games on it would be a DS lite. Like I said though, personally I find the best option these days is to just emulate it.

They look pretty cool, although I imagine significant work to mod, or more expensive than a normal DS lite to buy. You also lose the option of playing DS games which are also great in their own right.

Just give an emulator a whirl and see how it goes. GBA emulation has been pretty much perfected for years and can run on almost anything. I use a raspberry Pi but it will also run fine on pretty much any PC or android device, or any other emulation doohickys you may have knocking about.

At least then you can see if the games are something you want to spend time/money on with no up front cost.

Yeah I'm not actually thinking straight. I've got a modded 3DS XL and I'm sure you can convert GBA games to .cia using some injection software? Will take a look.

Same here tbh. Although I can put together Ikea furniture assuming itís the same and doesnít require actual screws or glue.

Tempted to get a standing one but the Mrs would go mental.

@Addy__ I'd just play them on that then. It will be far superior to one of the front lit GBA SP's.

Yeah think I will. Snes9x works a treat and the injection tools for gba, megadrive and nes are great.

Oh I wish I'd just fucking stop looking at shit. I'm close to pulling the trigger on a gpd xd plus after watching it's emulation capabilities with clean rom.

I've had my eye on one of those for quite a while, just haven't been able to bring myself to spend what they cost. Also keep getting tempted by the Nvidia Shield TV, however there are rumours of a new model later this year. I've got my eye on so many things atm that if even a few drop significantly on amazon's prime day I could end up spending a small fortune.

I keep nearly ordering a second Pi3B+ just so I can have one in a mega drive case next to my snes one.

Yeah i used to have the shield portable a few years ago. Cracking device and kind of wish I'd kept it now. Not really looked at the shield tv if i'm being honest. I'll take a look at what it can do. I got some travel expenses back on Friday so kind of thinking it takes a good chunk off the price of the gpd.

Have you got a decent android phone? One of those Bluetooth ipega controllers probably would be just as good?

    @THFourteen

Yeah I tried gaming on several phones in the past and just don't like it. I've tried multiple controllers but just hate the faff even though it's minimal. I'm constantly getting alerts, texts etc via work as well so it's a bit of a pain.

Yep I get it totally. Nothing beats a dedicated device.
