Registered 16 years agoI can't imagine EG is more than a drop in the ocean relative to the amount of data they serve every day, it's not exactly Reddit. I can't find any other sites that are blocked to referrals like that.
Maybe there's a forum group featuring far ruder pictures than we get to see in public. -

Registered 20 years agoIronically, while I originally couldn't view that gif in the thread, but the links it's made out of your command lines work fine now. Perhaps it's cached in my browser or something, but I can reproduce the issue using my own terminal.
Anyway, for me, just reloading the image makes it render - I guess my browser doesn't resend the referrer when I hit F5. Although testing it on http://pgl.yoyo.org/http/browser-headers.php suggests F5 does maintain that header, but clicking on the address bar and hitting enter doesn't. I guess I need to do more testing.
Maybe X201's right, and it's a hot-linking restriction implemented by imgur. -

Registered 20 years agoI'm not so sure. I have inline gifs turned off, so they all turn up as links, and as far as I can tell, those links don't go through the redirect server.
I tested one gif that wasn't in my cache; f5'ing it didn't get it to load, only selecting the address bar and hitting enter, which seems to be consistent with imgur detecting the referrer header, based on my understanding of when the browser sends that header and when it doesn't. It seems neilka's explanation is sufficient, and that doesn't actually involve craggy's coding at all.
Still, it's probably imgur's revenge for us not having portable view, and that is his responsibility. Come on, craggy! -

Registered 20 years agoHmm yeah, that's a bit odd. I don't remember if I found my avatar on imgur, but it seems a little more broken than other images on here.
I haven't configured avatars to be shown here, but if I go to my profile page, where the image should be there's a link which goes to:

However, if I go to yours, Fartpipe, the image is displayed and is also a link to:

Registered 20 years agoNo, that's because that's how anchor links work; if you don't specify a hostname, it assumes you mean a file on the current host.
All I know relating to the redirect is that the links in the page source are plain links to imgur's servers, and when I hover over a gif link, it shows the imgur address. On links where the redirect is used, although I can't find one right now to check, the mouseover shows the redirect server, to my best recollection. I've no idea why your preview tool doesn't work though. -
