iPod engraving: PC lameness...

I´m currently thinking about replacing my 2nd gen iPod with an iPod mini - and since they offer free engraving, I thought I´d personalize it a bit.

After much (well, a couple of minutes) of contemplating what witty-yet-cool words I wanted on the back of my 'pod, I decided on the always stylish "Bad motherfucker". Still fantasizing of the massive amounts of street-cred this would give me I, hit the preview-button.

Alas, my dreams were to come crashing down, as all I got was the "This message cannot be displayed" text. Same thing with just the word "fuck" - and apparently "cunt" is also a big no-no these days. Boo. Hiss.

Ah well - I shall be calling Apple in the morning for an explanation. It better be good.

Seriously though, someone on here posted a link to a BBC article saying iRiver and Zen were much better machines. So seriously, why an iPod Mini?

/even though I want one too

    /hops on the Apple Boat

    /feels part of something

    /commits suicide

Because I love the sound quality of my current iPod - and if the mini can do the same (which all sources indicate), I´m chuffed. Secondly, I like the look of it - it looks simple and sturdy, as opposed to the iRiver which looks like G.I Joes communicator. Thirdly, its an Apple.

So, while there may be alternatives that are slightly better (and I havent seen anyone claiming that they are any more than that), none of them are - IMO - on par with Apples product as a whole.

The iRivers I have seen are tiny and red, I think they get larger and are different colours as the Gb size gets larger.

Oh well. I know from experience you can't be talked out of it, so I won't try.

Buying the iRiver means using the rubbish software that comes with it. Buying the iPod means using iTunes. Doubt removed.

Like all Apple stuff it is the free software/interface you get with it that rally shows you why the price premium is deserved.

Even though I'm scared of saying it again after being nigh on attacked for my views ;) iTunes is worth the cost, seriously. Angel spent another 5 hours on sunday night wrestling with her shit Zen software to put some already tagged mp3s on it and still include the artist and album names...

Tell her to get the Redchair Software Notmad Explorer from here

It's loads better than the creative stuff (they even recommended it over their own software for a while!)

See, you shouldn't spend £200 on a purely consumer device and then have to spend more money on software just to get it to work as it should. IMO that is just unacceptable.

Correction. Buying an iRiver means that you don't need to use ANY software.

Well I suppose you may need to rip from CD to MP3 but Windows Media player will do that and if that's not good enough there are loads of free ones.

The point of my post was not to say that iriver are better; I've never used an ipod or itunes so I wouldn't know. I just happen to like my iriver. Alot.

Really? Then how do you rip CDs, alter tags, create playlists etc.?

Sorry, see above correction (no, not correction, ammendment). What I said wasn't actually wrong; one doesn't have to rip CDs or create playlists but if one wants to copy files to the player, you don't need anything.

Just for giggles Rutty (cause I agree with you) image if that was a console...

XBox 2 'value pack' (Includes Operating system/dashboard) £400

How can you advise someone that one is better without having ever used the other 0_o

And IMO manual transfering of files is just not acceptable. You didn't buy an external HDD, you bought a consumer MP3 player.

EDIT: Hang on, have you edited in a 'not' or am I just losing it? :)

The "not" was there all the time, I added the whole paragraph at the same time. Sorry, you must be losing it :-)

You're correct, I didn't just buy an external HDD. I bought a great MP3 player, with a radio, the battery lasts twice as long as the main competition and I don't get ripped off when I need a new one, I get to chose what software I want to use (if any) and it's an external HDD.

Only thing I don't like about it is that the controls on the unit itself are crap but I tend to use the remote which is fine.

BTW, I'm trying not to get into a "mine is better than yours" arguement. There's been a few of those already I believe.

When it comes to transfering my music to the HDD it's not really that manual. I have a shortcut on my desktop that does "xcopy c:\my music\*.mp3" h:\ /d /e /c /h /r /y" so all I do is plug it in and double click on the icon.

If you're talking to the US support people then ask for a very sweary engraving in proper English, they won't know what it means and will give it immediate approval. You know, something like 'lick my sweaty bollocks you chav wanker' - plus, what a great engraving for your 'pod!

rutty - far be it from me as an Apple fanboy to defend the Zen or whatever, but there are loads of excellent freeware ripping and labelling apps out there (CDex and id3tagit for example - imho much better than iTunes). :)
