So I finally purchased a PS4 last week. It was all going swimmingly till I decided to put a game disc in the drive. Please, does this sound right? When I first played Uncharted it was fine but when I tried Bloodbourne the drive is vibrating like a bastard. I've tried orientating the console on it's side with the same result and even holding it in my hands off the surface I still get the vibration. It's even worse with a Blu ray. PS4 Hive mind, help me out.

Registered 12 years agoDoes it do it with Uncharted now as well or only Bloodborne? It might quiet down after a while. I have Bloodborne digital so I don't know how hard it makes the fan work. -

Registered 13 years agoIt's not the fans. It's the drive. The noise you are hearing is just a vibration. I'm convinced it's not right. The video really doesn't pick up the true nature of the racket.
I can't test it with Uncharted as I swapped it with a fellow Eurogameite for Bloodbourne. But it wasn't making that noise with Uncharted as I recall and each and every Blu Ray I try produces the same fucking noise.

Ok I've watched the vid, the vibrating is not unusual, I've heard mine do that usually when it's installing the disc etc, it settles down after. The clicking noise though.... From about a minute in, if that's your ps4 It shouldn't be doing that.

Registered 13 years agoWell here's the thing.
I purchased it from Smyths online. They are claiming they won't take it back because they can't test it to see if it's faulty. They are currently refusing to refund as well. (I'm working on that) They want Sony to diagnose the problem which means sending it to them. Sony with seeing or hearing the problem claim that it's normal.
Basically I'm stuck between a rock and a hardplace until one of them decides to budge. -

Good shout. Is the game installed? It does make a racket while installing. Maybe try playing for half an hour and see if it quiets down/stops vibrating.

Registered 8 years agoDistance selling regulations in the UK protect the buyer. Smyths are legally obligated to replace or refund the item.
Look up your consumer rights online then quote the appropriate bits, they will cave in quickly, if not advice them you will be taking your case to trading standards. -

Registered 13 years agoYep, but they are being complete cocks about it. I guess my only recourse it to get trading standards involved.
They don't have any telephone customer service it's just cookie cutter responses via email. Boils my piss to think that if I'd just got it from Amazon I'd have no issues getting a return.
I'm trying to convince them that they are in breach of the Sale of Goods Act by not accepting a return as the console is just three days old. I think they are stalling. -

I regret to inform you that our company does not have the expertise available to inspect software and deem it faulty or not faulty. We refer our customers to manufacturers because they are best placed to help our customers with software queries.
The majority of software queries can be solved by the supplier carelines over the phone and in the comfort of your own home, which is often much easier for customers than having to return through us. Occasionally a console or tablet may need to be sent away to the manufacturer for repair and this is a service we are unable to offer, so it best to refer to the manufacturer for this.
We are not in a position to offer any form of redress until Sony confirm the fault,
Once the supplier has inspected an item and officially deemed it faulty, we can deal with the software return from there but unfortunately, without the official inspection from the likes of Sony, we simply cannot advise if a software item is faulty or not.
Sincere apologies for this issue and for any disappointment caused.
Please don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any further queries. -

is it a new c chassis ps4?, and as per
my earlier points is the game installed? Was the clicking
noise coming from the ps4?- oh right, yeah that's not right.
Yeah try taking to a store, get them to plug it in, if someone there has a ps4 they will likely recognise it's not right. As pointed out though the question is will they be able to help as you bought it online. Maybe send an email asking this or ring a store or just go down if theres one near enough.

Registered 13 years agoYep the clicking is the drive and it is indeed a C-chassis, which ironically I selected because I thought it would offer a quieter experience!
@Bowzer43 I was trying to convince them of that all day yesterday in my emails. -

@Toaster05 don't panic! I get the same thing.
It happens when I launch a game that I've just installed. It shows as so many gb, a full installation but you launch game and here the noise. I think it's cause it might show it's fully installed but in the background, but when you launch, it's installing a little more data. Eventually, the noise stops after I've played the game for a while.
And then subsequent launches of the game, and it's quiet.
Think I read that if you Remove the front cover for where the hdd is, there's a screw there that's not fully tightened - it's safe to turn it a little more and that ends the vibration.
Not tried that yet but I'm not so fussy. It's coming up almost two years and it's not bothered me enough to do anything.
Try this, play the game for about 10 mins, then rest mode and launch. When you launch from here on in, should be quiet. -

Absolute bellends. That's a thinly disguised way of opting out of all refunds or exchanges, which has to be breaking consumer law. They sold you a faulty product, it's their responsibility, not Sony's and not your's.

@Toaster05 or next time you hear vibration, press your hand on top of the drive. Not too hard but just press and the vibration should stop. Or just press around the side. It's likely because of that screw not fully tight.
I really should tighten it myself. -

Registered 13 years ago@pacrifice I've tried pushing on the corners and pushing on the top to no avail. Also I've tried on it's side and even holding it off a surface to discount that my desk top isn't flat.
The vibration is the drive itself and it does it whenever the drive spins, which I assume is when a game loads up. Fine for gaming but I purchased it as a blu-ray too. Sounds like a lawn mower in the room when trying to watch something on that. -
I know you have probably been through all of this but:
Act fast to return faulty goods
All this mentions is the retailer - not the manufacturer - it is their duty to deal with faulty items.
Under the Consumer Rights Act you have an early right to reject goods that are unsatisfactory quality, unfit for purpose or not as described and get a full refund.
But this right is limited to 30 days from the date of purchase of your product.
However, this right doesn’t apply to faulty digital content.
Bought after 1 October 2015
If you are outside the 30-day right to reject, you have to give the retailer one opportunity to repair or replace any goods or digital content which are of unsatisfactory quality, unfit for purpose or not as described.
You can choose whether you want the goods to be repaired or replaced.
But the retailer can refuse if they can show that your choice is disproportionately expensive compared to the alternative.
If the attempt at a repair or replacement is unsuccessful, you can then claim a refund or a price reduction if you wish to keep the product.
The Which? website about it has a tool to generate a letter if that helps at all?
