Picked this up today. Never played anything like it before aside from Farmvile on Facebook.
It's not bad. Sound is glitchy as it's got a bit of static on the music and I'm finding it hard to position myself when trying to water crops or lay fences. I've also no clue how to stop my tilled earth going back to sand. I'm fact I've no clue about most of the game. I've been lost twice and carried home.
Getting a bit more of a clue, but not much. I didn't realise you can level up. Music is nice and I've got another crop of parsnips growing as I slowly clear the farm. Learning how to craft and learning in useless at the arcade game and no clue how to find the missing book.
Days seem a bit short as it doesn't give you much time to do things. You can pop to a handful of houses and then rush back home before curfew. Music is relaxing though and is oddly compulsive as I want to keep growing and improving things. Think it will take hundreds of hours to do everything in this. Hopefully it's got enough in it to keep me interested.

Bought a crabpot last night and also repaired the bridge on the beach. I've nearly enough for the upgraded fishing rod and then it's the big save up for my house extension for the kitchen and the animal coop.
I've not been mining yet but I really need to stockpile some food before I start trying that. -
Just got enough money for the backpack expansion. Trying to clear out rats still and not even close to the coop. Met the wizard.
Worryingly, my kids were watching avidly. Suspect my days playing it are numbered.
Works well on the handheld. -

Going to buy the gf a Switch, she can buy this and then I can check it out for a while. If I still fancy it I might pick it up for my Xmas hols in the UK. -

"I can't decide whether or not to try Golf Story... I KNOW! By jove it's so simple! I'll just spend £280 on another console so someone ELSE can buy the game! Now I just need to decide what to do with the £15 I saved..." ;-D
Will be interested to seewhat sort of ad-hoc multiplayer you guys get up to in a two-Switch household.

You save even more money if you buy my missus one Derb. -

AHH I've been in there but forgot about any rats.....or never noticed any. I've just been busy fishing, slowly clearing my land and slowly growing more veg but it's going to be a long haul process. I genuinely like the grind though as I'm finding it quite relaxing. I've had a stressful few weeks so it's doing a good job de-stressing me
-
@Addy_B Exactly the same here. Two hellish weeks at work and buying a house and new car. Nice to zone out and worry about parsnips.
I'm also slowly clearing the space and have a small allotment and a lazy fat ginger cat. I don't think MegaCorp are worried about my arrival quite yet. -
Why did i not pick up the Switch when i went out to catch the bus? I want to play this now! -

Registered 17 years agoThe plan was always to get a 2nd Switch for the gf; I'd actually pre-ordered 2 at launch but she decided against it as she was busy with school and work and wasn't really gaming. Pokemon is the big appeal but she used to play Harvest Moon so this was another bullet in the gun for spending the money.
Recently she's started playing on her PS4 again, so when I mentioned this was now out she mentioned getting a Switch again. She's away for a weekend in Amsterdam next weekend, so if I grab one today she can get it set up and use it on the flights.
And I get to see what the fuss is about. -

Go into the options menu, you can switch on an indicator (square box) that show where the action will take place.
I've also no clue how to stop my tilled earth going back to sand. I'm fact I've no clue about most of the game. I've been lost twice and carried home.
Keep playing, you'll get the hang of it.

I've got a case for it and I'm carrying a rucksack. Only reason I left it was I suspect the kids would have been upset. It'd have been a two minute job to pick it up.
Now I'm off to look up the work shtick and make sure it means what I think it means

Bought this, this morning... may get round to trying it later -

Registered 10 years agoWow... So this has turned out to be the most addictive game I've played in a long time.
Loaded it up last night for a quick go before bed, and stayed on it until 430 AM. Woke up around 10ish and straight back on.
The game play loop isn't as predictable as I remember Harvest Moon being. There are so many different things to do, and so many intriguing little details that each day feels different and new.
Loving all the different characters and their stories, and the way the world slowly expands and gets richer. The best thing is that I know that I've barely scratched the surface.
Kind of blown away, if I'm honest. Without doubt the best £10.99 I've spent on games in a long time as I can see it being a game I dip in and out of for months, if not years. -
@Devilligan
I agree. I've just been drawn into it in a big way. Sure I could get to a point next week where I think fuck this, but for now I'm eager to just do the daily grind as I'm actually loving the fishing and really want to save up and buy these upgrades. I've not even touched the mines yet.
Couple of questions. A key that Gunther has apparently opens the sewers. I can't seem to find this anywhere. Is this unlocked later and should I forget this for now.
Right near my farmhouse is a small cave that doesn't seem to do anything. Am I missing something here? -

No I have the fibreglass one which said I could use bait. I've no idea how to do it and what does it actually achieve if I can....as im able to fish without it. -

I've had the cut scene about the key, but Gunther hasn't mentioned anything about it to me yet. I'm assuming it unlocks further down the line, maybe when you've stocked the library with enough treasures.
No idea about the cave. If you search about in that are of the farm you'll find a weird message from your grandpa. Might have something to do with it.

From Reddit:
Add bait/lure to fishing rod
Make sure the fishing rod has a slot for (the starting one doesn't). Select the bait/lure with A, move to the rod, and attach with Y. -
@RobAnybody
Cool I thought as much. I'll just keep plodding along. -

https://stardewvalleywiki.com/Bait
It doesn't mention how to bait the rod on the Switch (and I've only just started playing on the Switch so I don't have a fiberglass rod yet) but the details on the above page for PS4 and Xbone should help you.
That page also mentions that: "fishing rods do not require it. However, attaching bait to a fishing rod will apply effects that can help the player catch fish."
Edit: Addy_B has the correct answer re baiting the rod..gif)
