Registered 13 years agoExcellent twitter thread from Andy Richter on the Louie thing. The final post nails or for me.

“The PC police are not ruining comedy. It is a challenging time to be making jokes. You either accept the challenge or retreat into a past that was easier for you. I hope that this kind of selfish, easy, decency-contrarianism soon becomes as hack as airline food and mother-in-laws“ -

FWIW I found the Louis excerpt mostly funny. I can also respect that the Parkland Survivors who've chosen advocacy are an exceptional bunch and what they went through was terrible, but if you frame their situation with humour I'm going to laugh at it.
I don't know about his other comedy, but looking at that I do find it a bit strange how common the "Oh, so you identify as a different gender? Well, I identify as a house plant hur hur hur" type of joke is.
I also respect a person's right to self-identify however they please, but Andy Richter refers to trans shaming, while Louis was talking about gender neutral self-identification. How that isn't a legitimate target for comedy, I do not know.
Hopefully we all agree that homosexuality isn't a choice, it's how a person is born. Similarly, it's generally accepted, certainly on here, that transgender people have no choice over their gender identity and their pronoun should acknowledge this.
I'm basically a reasoned, polite person, so if you tell me you want to be referred to as they/them then I'll respect that choice, barring a few slip-ups from time to time, but I remain sceptical that people who identify as gender neutral or non-binary absent any other physical or emotional misgendering, aren't consciously making that choice. It feels like we've had a few decades to get our heads around gender reassignment and now the rug is being pulled from under our feet.
This is complicated, unsurprisingly, by the large minority of transgender people who aren't comfortable identifying as male or female and so also fall outside strict binary definitions. I feel there's enough of a difference between this kind of accepted condition and, say, a teenager who identifies as non binary, within a generation notorious for their introversion and dislike of social interaction.
I'd be perfectly happy for he/she being abolished and everyone getting referred to as they/them. I don't see that anything would be lost and a lot of gender stereotypes need to go as well. Some people would still want a different pronoun though, and that's comedy fodder.
Also, nobody famous died, right? Just the death of comedy then?
Oh, and some of the recent comedy specials on Netflix have been woeful. Bert Kreisher? Jesus. I've liked the John Mulaney, Demetri Martin and Lliza Schlesinger (especially the bit about the dog - killed me) specials from this year. Probably others. Shame we don't have a Netflix thread.
Anyway I'll be back here later with some questions about my NAS. -

Don't worry 2019 will claim its first victim soon and people can get on with feigning heartbreak and shock that a 94 year old person has died
