Robin Hardy, director of The Wicker Man, has died aged 86 :(

Sad news. But it's nice that he lived to see The Wicker Man go from being deemed unclassifiable and unreleasable by the studio - heavily edited (by 20 minutes or so) and essentially dumped as a B-feature in a double-bill - to being recognised as one of the greatest "horror" films ever made.

I remember when I first started getting into film, and discovered The Wicker Man, the 80-something minute shortened version was the only version in existence. The original 100-ish minute cut was considered lost - presumed buried in landfill under a motorway! The missing footage was the stuff of legend; something we'd never see.

It's great that the long version was eventually rediscovered (in Roger Corman's vaults) and that it happened within Robin Hardy's lifetime. Not every artist gets to live long enough to see their misunderstood, butchered, and partially-lost "magnum opus" be rediscovered, restored, and find its audience.

It must've given him some sense of satisfaction / closure / peace that the story of The Wicker Man had a happy ending :)

@ghostgate2001 makes me wonder what version I've seen as I've only watched it once. When was this complete version found? I don't remember it being particularly short or having heard this before so I'm probably all good.

@FearNoEvil You really came into this thread on the day someone died of what sounds like a pretty horrible fight against cancer and say that? I'm not keen on the cult of celebrity myself, but going into a thread about their deaths and saying "good riddance" is a bit sick.

Sorry to hear about Caroline, she seemed like a nice person.

You could've at least tried to say something funny/witty.

@ChiefGB Easiest way to tell the 3 versions (short, long, and Final Cut) apart is how the film starts:

If it started with a seaplane flying out to the island, it's the short version.
If it started on the mainland with a church scene, then the seaplane, it was the Final Cut version.
If it started on the mainland but there were more mainland scenes (police station, missing girl case, panda cars, etc) as well as the church scene, and then the seaplane, it was the long version.

Hope that settles it for you! :)

IIRC, the long version was found sometime around 2000 and released on DVD. Wikipedia begs to differ, apparently, but I recall various sources (film-guide books, Moviedrome, etc) describing the long version as "lost" as late as the 1990s.

The "Final Cut" was prepared by Robin Hardy only a few years ago for the film's 40th Anniversary and is somewhere in between, incorporating some but not all of the additional footage from the long version, and re-editing a few scenes, etc.

Cimino was one of the screenwriters for Silent Running, but he didn't direct it (that was Douglas Trumbull). :)

He also didn't direct Magnum Force, but he did help write the screenplay.

Ok. Jut did a quick IMDB scan and didn't fact check. I was tired.

Didn't know he rebuilt his face. How very moderately interesting :-)
