Considering most people seem to be content with the rubbish bitrates that Netflix and the like give out (compared to BR) I am surprised BR even took off tbh.
Whilst lots of people have 40-50" screens at home, and BR does give a noticeable quality boost over DVD, I don't think most people will notice the next step up. Sure if you run them side by side and tell people what to look for they may be able to see the difference, but under normal viewing conditions I think it will be a tough sell.
Agreed though as time goes on the differences are becoming less pronounced. True on the 90inch PJ screen I use you probably would notice some difference between 1080p and 4K, and with HDR as well certainly.
And if in a few years time everything is 4K it wont matter anyway. However I still maintain that any material made more that 10 years ago isn't going to look that much better in 4K. -

Registered 7 years ago@gamingdave it's HDR not necessarily the UHD that makes the big difference.
The Amazon stuff is generally incredible, I see huge difference on my 48" screen. Still to see if UHD Blu Ray will be necessary if the HDR is the boost rather than the resolution. UHD streams end up in my view at HD Blu-Ray quality. As 4K is pretty standard now for new TVs, you at least benefit from that. -

It all depends on how the transfer is done. Some old films look absolutely amazing on BR. Laurence of Arabia is breathtaking, and was made from a 4K scan, so that should be ready to go straight onto UHD. IIRC most recent remasters of classics, whether just for BR or a cinema re-release, have been at 4K (or higher).

Of course it's only worth it if the studio is going to put in the effort with the transfer. -

Its not really the transfer thats the issue, just the age of the material in the end. For example they rescanned Star Trek TNG back in at 4K as well. But I can't see that looking any better on UHD than what it currently does. If anything 4K will just show up the imperfections even more.

Oh I am sure that most films will look better than they ever have in 4K, to coin a phrase, but its how much better in the end. -

Registered 14 years agoAll large format/70mm stuff will look better. Some things have been slightly bollocksed up on bluray, 2001 for example. -

Registered 17 years agoFair enough point, there are diminishing returns. And LoA was probably a bad example, being shot on 70mm in the first place.
Realistically I doubt many of my favourites would look any better. I watch The Fog every year, and doubt that would be better on UHD, same goes for Trading Places.
For classics it would be a select few I would re-re-rebuy, and only if there was going to be a noticable difference on my equipment. New releases, maybe, but as it will be a while before I get a 4K projector, hopefully the prices will have dropped inline with the BR by then. -

TBH I recently bought a new 1080p PJ, kinda hoping that by the time I am done with it roll on the wall TV's will be reasonably priced (by that I don't mean £250 at Argos).

Oh I am sure once newer films start using 4K for their CGI shots and HDR is taken into account that they will look epic on new equipment. But do I really need to buy Starwars again, struggling to see it myself. -

Registered 7 years agoI'm not too bothered about older films. Some of them will look better (as @anephric pointed out, anything in large format) some of them won't. I just rewatched Fifth Element in UHD, albeit it streamed, and it is fantastic.
I have old favourites that I like to rewatch, but I ultimately watch way more new/recent than old as a ratio (I only go and see the big block busters in cinemas, now I have my own large screen UHD and surround sound system (not to mention cheaper beer) in the comfort of my own home for all the rest). I'm also fortunate to have basically skipped out on buying films in physical media in any substance until now, beyond about a dozen blu-rays.
Most recent films will look better and any new films not being filmed in 4k is just plain bonkers (especially as many cinemas use 4k digital projectors...)
Also, tony:
- TNG was rescanned in 2k.
- on star wars: what if Disney released a UHD version undoing the tampering done by George Lucas... In any case, I got the blue-rays for Christmas, and some of it doesn't actually hold up that well even in normal HD, not to mention the acting and corny story.
- who abbreviates projector to PJ? -
I just switched my console on for the first time in a while and it says there's an update. Ultra HD! \o/ -

Pretty sure they were scanned in at 4K but I have no evidence to back up that claim currently.

Starwars is Starwars , TBH I am not one of these nutjobs who really cares one way or the other if Han shot first or not.
Everyone abbreviates projector to PJ. -

Sorry, only just seen this. Still haven't had chance to check it out but don't have a BR drive on my pc in any case! Would be worth a small investment if it worked for all, especially kids films. Although I doubt Disney are included...
@Dougs Any luck? You need to have a blu-ray drive in a PC I seem to remember. If you are in the US you can go to a Walmart (which owns VUDU) and use a machine in the store to do it... -

Registered 16 years agoHave any of you bothered with one of the two Ultra HD players that are on the market yet?
I'm tempted to get one, if only initially to have a better regular Blu Ray player than the one present in the consoles. Neither the PS4 or XB1 are regarded as particularly good players, and I'm starting to notice the areas they're lacking in when playing back on a large 4K screen.
Neither 4K player is particularly cheap though, and disc wise there are very few movies actually worth buying at the moment.
I dunno, I think I'm just hankering for another gadget. Someone put me off.

All types of physical media are effectively Betamax nowadays. Did that help? -
I'd hold off until the PS4k announcement, we might get lucky with UHD support, even if you didn't want to use a playstation to play your UHD's the price-point of players would be dramatically altered. -

Registered 7 years agoOk, so my Xbone S is arriving tomorrow, so I've just ordered a couple UHD Blu-rays from Amazon so I can put it through it's paces!
After some extensive research (i.e. a cursory google search, and clicking on a couple of the links on the first page), I ordered the Revenant & Sicario, and then for good measure (i.e. probably using poor judgement on my part) I added Batman vs Superman to the basket too, because I hadn't seen it yet, and because the shiny packaging had HDR all over it. Also, reviews on Amazon say that the UHD is an extended version which is better than the theatrical cut, which is on the regular HD disc... -

Registered 7 years ago@quadfather Excellent, well done. I'm 5 hours behind UK time, and my films are actually getting delivered same day, i.e. today. So I can look at them in awe until the S (for which I just got the shipping notificiation!!!!) arrives. Thank you Amazon.

Nice one. I am suitably jealous but can only blame my own lazy arse for not sorting the Xbox out in time.
It's really pissing me off - telly is sorted, got a new bargain onkyo 4k amp (txnr646 for 268 quid!) And there's a distinct hole where the Xbox should be.gif)
Still, order 1 4k film already regardless! -

I wanted mad mad fury road as I hear it's a full octane bullshit ride of madness but I realised I'd already got that to check out the atmos track, doh! Though I may double dip
So I got the kingsman's secret service. Not an ideal one but might be a interesting choice as gives me a chance to actually look as opposed to trying to keep up with action

Cool. It's all good though, as (and Im sure you'll agree), the fun is just getting it all and going through it. What a time to be alive! -
@quadfather I'm jealous for your atmos. Is it any good? which type of atmos speakers do you have? (on top of existing speakers, in ceiling, high on wall in front of you). Could be a relatively easy upgrade for me if I wanted to do it.
