    @Technoishmatt

    I'm about to find out. I've just installed a new atmos onkyo amp and studied the speaker placement for quite some time. My av setup is in an attic with an apex roof, so challenging isn't the word.

    I've plumped for changing it from 7.1 to 5.1.2, and the speakers I've got 3 quarters up the apex are angled down to the listening position. I've gone for top middle speakers for these. Bear in mind these are just normal speakers, angling down. Thought about upfiring speakers but because of the roof shape I think I'm going to get more luck with ceiling / half way up speakers.

    Let me just finish this pint and I'll go back and check mad Max out and let you know :D

    @quadfather I'm jealous for your atmos. Is it any good? which type of atmos speakers do you have? (on top of existing speakers, in ceiling, high on wall in front of you). Could be a relatively easy upgrade for me if I wanted to do it.
    Ok. Here's a fucking update - oh my fucking god!!!

    Put mad Max on and set it to atmos. Fuck me, it's incredible - my 7.1 wasn't bad before but Jesus, the atmos completely surrounds you everywhere. And the height definitely makes a big difference.

    It's a new amp which is obviously helping, and it's a mental acoustic film, but I've only put some small speakers on the ceiling with some basic cabling but fuck me, it makes a difference.

    Jesus Christ, it's phenomenal - you know that feeling when you're in a cinema and you don't move because you're completely blown away by the sound? Oh yes. Oh yes indeed :)

    @quadfather motherfu....

    DON'T MAKE ME UPGRADE!!!

    I have the speakers already, but I'd need to swap out my current 1506 for the 1606 (they are currently the same price on amazon), and offload the 1506 for not too few dollars. And then I'd have to install the speakers.

    I would put them high up on the front wall though and direct them towards the seating area. From what I read, that would seem to be ok?

    But also, I might just tell myself, Fury Road soundtrack is like that already :)

    @Technoishmatt

    Haha

    All I can say is that it is a vast improvement over 7.1.

    Vast.

    It makes watching films completely different.

    It's not just me either.- a mate was watching it with me who knows my kit and made the same comments.

    I think that would work about what you say with the speakers. I decided in the end (because of my room layout) that the 2 ceiling speakers would be better near the rear surround sound speakers and it works perfectly. And like I say, they're only half way up the wall angled down and it's amazing.

    I'd love to hear 7.1.4 now :)

    Do you live in a detached house?

    If not, I would hate to be your neighbour! :-)

    @AceGrace

    No, mid terrace, but fairly old so walls are very thick. Plus it's an attic room, and I never play anything loud after 10pm. I don't have it deafeningly loud - just loud enough to appreciate the effects

    In fact, normally the sounds are me playing some 16bit emulated game.

    Which is probably more annoying than a film, thinking about it :)

    Sort of. Easier to see than to talk about it -

    Front -

    Top middle right / rear right -

    Top middle left / rear left -

    If the film has been finished at 2k, which most are, what are they supposed to do?

    Almost like the format's a bit pointless.

    There's an article here about the new films and what format they were shot in and how they were put onto 4k, gives you a bit more info.

    I was looking through their list thinking, "No Warcraft..?" But there it is at the end :)

    I'll have to pick up Pacific Rim whenever that actually comes out...

    Problem I have is the films themselves. As in, are they any good. Here's the empire ratings for the ones I was interested in, and their prices -

    deadpool - £20. 3/5
    x-men:apocalypse - £25. 2/5
    batman vs superman - £25. 3/5
    the amazing spiderman 2 - £26. 3/5
    pacific rim - reference £25. 3/5
    warcraft - £25. 2/5

    Surely we are only watching 4K for the whizz bangs though. Certainly seems to be the priorities at the studios too going from the releases. Sadly most of those films aren't exactly Oscar winners usually. It's Disney that really need to pull their fingers out for me. Real tent pole movies with the potential to knock our socks off visually. Imagine force awakens in 4K HDR, I would literally weep.

    Imagine 2001 in 4k. Or Lawrence.

    That would make me upgrade, not fucking X-Men.

    @ChiefGB

    Yeah definitely. It's probably because I've been watching some ace films on it so far - mad Max, the star treks, revenant etc.

    Still, saying that, 3/5 from empire is about 5/5 everywhere else

    Given the history of the series it will, several times.
