Jesus, so the game is just gone, as I understood it this was nearly done. They'd run several beta's open and closed, hadn't they?

Feedback must have been decidedly poor to just cancel it so late on.

I'd been playing since the alpha... It was OKish. It would have been released to a loud "meh" then been forgotten.

Rubbish. I never loved Fable but always enjoyed it, and my GF loved them. Press Play are great, do not deserve this shit either.

Fuck's sake, what a crap bit of news. GG MS.

"These changes are taking effect as Microsoft Studios continues to focus its investment and development on the games and franchises that fans find most exciting and want to play."

But I wanted to play Fable Legends! How much work did it need to be in a state fit to release? You'd think they'd keep them going long enough to get it out the door and perhaps make some money from it, so projections must've been really low to stomp Lionhead out of existence this late in the day. That's a real shame :(

Although I've not played a Fable game since the second one, I presume they all retained the quirky British humour throughout? Loved that about their games.

    Will be sorely missed.

@mikew1985 They should have just released it this late on in development and at least got a bit of their investment back.

It's bollocks is what it is. Cancelling the game is one thing, closing the devs is another. At a time when MS go on about putting out more games and all that, and then they go and close two of their most distinctive first party studios. I don't give a fuck about the financials, that's rubbish for me as a gamer on XBox.

Wtf the game was just updated a few days ago, I'd only played it a couple of times once at the very beginning when it was terrible, and another a month or so ago again. It had come on quite some way. I can only assume this is very sudden news for them to have updated the beta so recently.

    Wow. This absolutely fucking sucks.

Why now after all these betas, so near to being finished? Why does the whole studio have to be closed down and everyone have to lose their jobs?

    Not cool.

From the outside, MS are not going to look good due to the sudden nature of this. And seriously, what the fuck at the 'choose to focus on games that excite players' bollocks. So, even more focused on massive selling but ultimately tired IPs like Halo and Forza? How long before Halo Wars 2 and Sea of Thieves gets canned for being more niche titles that don't get as many "excited" as the 8 million selling IPs?

This is clearly a revenge plot by Hanno Lemke after he was ousted from Black Tusk and Shangheist was canned.

    Obviously not serious

This is really shitty news for all concerned. All these devs out on their arses, and their games cancelled. And at a time when MS needs more first party output, not less.

Awk, I loved Fable. Was probably my favorite Xbox game, even though it was a bit shit.

I was just thinking to myself "I wonder how many first party studios MS have left now?"

Turns out it's more than I would have guessed!

    343 Industries
    Decisive Games
    FIT
    (FUN)ction Studios
    Good Science Studio
    Kids and Lifestyle Entertainment
    Launchworks
    Leap Experience Pioneers
    Microsoft Casual Games Team
    Microsoft Garage
    Platform Next Studios
SOTA - State of The Art Studios
    Team Dakota
    Turn 10 Studios
    Lift London
    Rare
    Mojang
    The Coalition
    BigPark

I know a few of those are Hololens studios, but still.

edit: You could, at a push, add Reagent Games to that list as well but I don't think MS actually own them. MS Game Studios are just publishing Crackdown 3 I think?

What annoys me is that they hired Casey Hudson, and then put him to work on Hololens.

Loved Black and White but the news is hardly suprising as they haven't realised a decent game in years.
  • Deleted user 7 March 2016 15:24:58
I was always baffled by Fable, a game series which was so focused on the ancillary filler that the core game got progressively worse with each iteration.

Hope all the Lionhead staff land on their feet.
  • Deleted user 7 March 2016 15:25:16
I will just repeat what I put on the front page:

The reality is business is business, welcome to the real world people.

Not good for people who have lost their jobs of course (and I have been in the same position - company buy out, a few years later company gets closed down).

But in the end this was always going to happen once PM left. He WAS Lionhead in the end.

They'll probably be better off without Microsoft as they have terrible record with first party.

Sony do it all the time, don't see anyone battering their door down with a virtual pitchfork.

But of course this is Microsoft after all lets pile on them for doing something that every large company when they buy out a smaller company eventually does (and I have been on the receiving end myself)

Shame it was a pile of shit.

Lionhead has only made Fable games since MS took over. They haven't released anything since Molyneux left. This isn't Bullfrog we're talking about.

Yes, every large company does this, and gaming companies are no exception.

But I'll still get annoyed when devs I have liked, who have made games I've really enjoyed, get closed down. It's shit for the people involved, and it's shit for me as a player.

Thats fair, the writing has been on the wall for a while though with LionHead. Has it come as a bit of a shock, yes it has tbh. Completely unexpected .. not really.

Cancellation of a game is one thing, complete closure of the studio is another. And Press Play too?

    Bollocks I say!

I hope Microsoft have a good E3 after this because I'm becoming increasigly frustrated with their focus on few core franchises.
