I'm off to SF in a couple of weeks for a wedding, spending 6 days there. I've been once before, 10 years ago and did some of the touristy stuff; Alcatraz, some muppet mate recommended Fisherman's Wharf - which was horrid, I had tacos in the mission, went to Amoeba Records, drove down the coast to Monterey etc. Any recommendations on what's really worth doing? |

Registered 14 years agoI liked walking over the Bridge then over to Sausalito, then taking the boat back to SF, weather depending.
Did you do the aquarium in Monterey? If not go back and do that.
Go to the Exploratorium Thursday evening when all the kids aren't allowed in.
Eat everywhere. -
Can second Sausalito, beautiful little town.
Their street food is ace! -

If last week's Giant Bombcast is anything to go by you need to watch out for the human shit on the pavements. -

I probably won't spend much time in the tenderloin.

Registered 16 years agoThere's a good Indian restaurant called Dosa, near Japantown. There's not a whole lot ear around there though, apart from karaoke bars. -

While you're over there, check out battery spencer (it's across from the town on the other side of highway 101) for great views and photo opportunities. -

Go to Yosemite and do the tourist thing of pronouncing it "YO-seh-might", as if you're greeting a passing Jew. -

Registered 16 years agoMuir Woods are worth a visit if you can't get to Yosemite.
I'd also recommend exploring Golden Gate Park and visiting Baker Beach for a slightly different view of the bridge (Both a bit out of the way so use an Uber). Baker Beach is a nudist beach though so expect overweight naked people playing volleyball. -

Should probably go into the Random Musings thread but I always wonder why it's only the fugly people who feel the need to get their kit off in public.

They run day trips from SF but it would be a long day and a whistle stop tour. Obviously staying there is the best bet but if you aren't going to be back in that part of the world any time soon then it is an amazing place to visit.

This. Do a tour of the Korbel champagne-winery and enjoy the gorgeous scenery. Maybe drive by Stinson Beach on the way back.

You can put it behind your ear and maybe use body paint if you're really feeling it -

Registered 14 years agoMoved out to SF at the end of January. I'd definitely echo the sentiments of those saying to bike the bridge and go to Baker Beach. Really beautiful views doing both.
Also for a great look at the city there's a number of different small walks/hikes to do. Twin Peaks and Bernal Heights are my two favourite views. One during the day and the other at night is well worth doing.
If chilling in a park enjoying a drink / joint / few edibles is down your alley Dolores Park is great for that. And while you're in around the Mission my favourite burrito spot is Taquira Los Coyotes on 16th Valencia. Try the California style burrito. -
Blondie's Bar on Valecia was pretty cool. Mean looking bearded dude kept bringing me his whisky recommendations with menacing looks but a gentle manner.
