But not any time soon, perhaps next year or a couple of years from now. Bought that Korean monitor to tide me over. -
Ebuyer have the XR341CK for £659. -

Registered 18 years agoOmg, that looks incredible. I didn't even know I wanted it, but now I do.
Although... Vive for a similar cost... -
Yeah I know. Perspective. No doubt VR is really cool but Im very traditional and kind of happy to wait until the res is better and the kinks are ironed out in future revisions.
A freesync monitor of such epic proportions is really massaging my lust glands tho :/ -

Registered 18 years agoYeah, I can see the appeal tbh. When they demoed Tomb Raider in that video above, it looked amazing with the wide FOV. -

Registered 6 years agoI bought an LG 29" ultrawide a couple of months ago and I love it.
I was umming and ahhing about getting a 34" version but couldn't justify the extra few hundred quid or indeed +£500 for a curved curved Acer X34
The only slight issue I have is that FMV sections in games tend to be standard resolution so do not scale to ultra widescreen settings, but it's a minor quibble tbh. -
Because of my desk setup, my monitors are on a shelf. Looking at the stand of that Acer I dont think the shelf is big enough to accommodate it. Weird stand, 3 pronged feet. Quite a distance between front and back feet. -

So its 12 inches from front to back of the feet on the stand. My shelf is 11 inches. Not faffing with wall stands. May think of another way. Pretty sure there is no other monitor that size in that res at that hz with that freesync range tho, so not as if there are alternatives :/ -

I love a bit of linustechtips. -
Does anyone reckon this would do the trick? Think I would prefer the stand as opposed to an arm as although is held by angled brackets and I would rather spread the weight load than have it one place as happens with a clamp type. Monitor weighs around 12 pounds.

The more I investigate (am now a 21:9 expert) the more I realise we really need to wait for the next spec of displayport to be able to have our cake and eat it.
The XR341CK is the only decent 3440 res 34 inch freesync monitor you can buy right now which also has a good freesync hz range. There is more choice if you dont want freesync or want to go with gsync (costs more for gsync tho!).
The XR341CK is well known for a raft of issues too.
Dropping res down gives much more choice but not sure I want to do that, even though there is quite a saving to be had.
Maybe the time is right to play the waiting game, see what monitors are released with the next gen gpu's. Yes, there is always something new around the corner but 34 inch high refresh freesync 21:9 monitors are very much in their infancy right now.

Registered 18 years agoHad the Acer Predator G-Sync one, 3440x1440, for a while before I returned it.
When it worked fully with a game it was truly brilliant, but be aware most games need a fair bit of fiddling. Also, you need some serious GPU power - my 980 Ti was fairly proficient at delivering about 60 fps for most current stuff, but ideally you want to use it with SLI.
I was spoiled by 100fps+ on my existing Asus ROG Swift for most stuff so I returned it and I'm very happy with my decision. I can totally see the attraction but I don't think we're quite there yet, certainly if you want to avoid SLI as I do.
As for curved, hate it for TV's on principle, but it's quite effective for a monitor as it's likely always going to be one person right in the sweet spot.

@yegon why exactly did you return it, refresh related only?
Still considering. Ebuyer have it for 659. Amazon have just dropped price ro 689.
If I paid a little extra for Amazon I would at least have total peace of mind that if there are any issues during warranty they would sort it no problem so that does sound like a low risk way of doing it.
I know ebuyer have a good rep too but I think Amazon would be top choice, is that fair to say? -

My x34 had no issues with the hw, I bought it from Overclockers. I returned it due to the combination of GPU power needed and the amount of fiddling required for most games. Mostly the latter really.
There are a number of games that support ultra wide natively, but it's by no means the norm and every time you want to play a game it's a crapshoot as to what happens. Stuff that isn't native, you can either play it 2560x1440 with vertical letter boxing, or go on WideScreenGaming forum and investigate for the fix. There is a decent application that supports a number of games that fixes it for you automatically. I forget the name. Doesn't work flawlessly though.
Any manual changes to fix the res via ini and cfg files are often overwritten the moment you use the official launcher or in-game gfx options. Meaning back to editing those pesky ini and cfg files. Making files read only generally doesn't work I found.
Equally, although you can get unsupported games running at 21:9 reasonably well, often it has a weird impact on hud's, overlays and gun fov.
If you're willing to put in the time, it's a fantastic payoff. I played Witcher 3 and GTA IV (both officially 21:9) for a bit
and it was pretty incredible. But I found I was spending more time fiddling with unsupported games than actually playing them, which irritated me. Went back to my 1440p Swift briefly and the simplicity of it was just too appealing to abandon so I packed up the x34 and returned it.
Also, re vertical letter boxing, if you get a panel with any corner bleed whatsoever it will scream at you, if you choose to play it that way. Mine had no bleed thankfully, but I was a bit lucky on that count judging by some threads I read extensively prior to purchase.
Don't use my PC for productivity, but that res is fantastic for multiple windows. Easily have 2 or 3 well sized windows side by side. Still use my old Apple Thunderbolt Display in that regard, wish they sold 21:9 iMacs.

LG's new 34 inch 3440 res monitors are incoming and the flat version 34um88 is listed on the uk site for £629.

34uc88-b Curved version isnt on the uk site but is up on amazon.de for £789:

Registered 18 years agoCurved is great in the context of a PC and one person using it imo. Dunno how it'd effect colour sensitive work /productivity stuff though.
Curved TV's make we want to surgically lengthen my arms and snap the whole thing flat in one motion though. Terrible idea, it'd only make sense if the TV was so large that you could have a sweet spot large enough for five or six people. If you've got room and the money for that, can I come and stay at yours please?
Edited by yegon at 11:13:21 27-03-2016 -
@yegon Never experienced curved either on TV or on a monitor. Im assuming the reason they are curved is because a 34 inch flat screen has too much outside a persons main vision cone and the curve tries to compensate that. Must read up on it more before commiting to anything. -
A slight curve is nothing to be ashamed of it's perfectly normal
