Eagerly awaiting this in the hope that we might actually get some solid answers rather than just more questions like we got from the interesting but deeply flawed IMO Prometheus.

Having seen Prometheus five times now, including again over the Christmas period, I am still none the wiser on the motivations of the Engineers; why the Engineer at the start of the movie sacrificed himself (supposedly he starts life on Earth although it is never confirmed in the movie), why ancient man left paintings showing the way to a planet that made biological weapons or why they were apparently going to wipe out life on Earth 2,000 years ago (again, speculated in the movie but never actually confirmed). Prometheus looks fantastic as I'd expect from a Ridley Scott movie, has an eeries and fantastic atmosphere but is a very frustrating movie to watch; painful in the case of those stupid scientists who first confront the snake-like alien when they conveniently get lost. What really irked me though is the scene where David speaks to the awakened Engineer but he and Weyland are simply attacked rather than actually given some answers. I can understand wanting to maintain a sense of mystery but it is ridiculous that in a 2 hour movie the only answers we actually got were not really answers at all but pure speculation by the scientists who went there.

I really hope that Alien: Convenant gives us some proper answers to questions the previous movie left unanswered. I've been reading a lot of fan theories and while some are undoubtedly interesting (not so much the one that Jesus was an engineer though...), in many cases these are better thought out than what most Hollywood script writers can come up with. The good news is than Damon Lindelof is not involved with the Convenant script and he was the person who wrote Lost, an undoubtedly terrific series that never really answered any of the questions the fans wanted either and just created more, especially in the last season. That is great news because it increases the likelihood that we will get some answers in this next movie.

Really hope this movie is good beyond fantastic looks and direction which are pretty much guaranteed anyway. The trailer does make the movie look like a remake of Alien though, not necessarily a bad thing but I am hoping for more.

P.S. The life cycle of the alien doesn't make much sense really; there's an egg which hatches a face hugger that then gestates another life form inside a living host which then bursts out in a suitably grotesque manner and grows into an adult.

While nature might create those kinds of things (since there are parasitic insects that do exactly that), it doesn't make any sense why anyone would bioengineer such an inefficient life form like that unless its intention is to take on characteristics of the host each cycle which allows for incredibly quick evolution?

This is kind of alluded to in Prometheus where we see early version of the face hugger: the snake like alien) and the actual Xenomorph (seen at the very end of the movie (not really sure what that massive squid thing was that came from Elizabeth Shaw or why it became so big). Presumably this cycle has occurred elsewhere to produce the more evolved eggs found in the crashed alien ship in the original Alien (which remember is set only 40-50 years after Prometheus according to what I've read but which features a ship that obviously crashed there hundreds if not thousands of years ago). I guess we are meant to conclude that the ship from Alien originally came from the planet featured in Prometheus but somehow crashed landed on the planetoid featured in Alien (which confusingly is also shown to be a moon of a large ringed planet just as it is in Prometheus).

I don't know her full CV but she played the sister of Catelyn Stark in Game of Thrones, had an idiot for a son and was pushed down that hole in the sky to her death. :D
She was also fantastic in Red Road.

I didn't hate it. For a humanisation of the people that are all going to die scene it wasn't bad. The crew certainly looks a lot less shot than Prometheus.

It was ok. Bit weird marketing though, cos its quite boring and unnecessary.

@Darren I thought the idea was that the egg that the face hugger lays in the host body, somehow harvests the DNA of the host, so that the secondary life form (the 'alien') takes on some of the host's characteristics.

This can be seen in Alien 3 - where the alien gestates in a dog and has dog-like features.

Not sure how this is advantageous on an evolutionary level, but I guess it promotes diversity and possibly gives the alien a few nasty extra tricks.

I'd imagine the reason the alien takes on the host characteristics is so it has a better chance of survival in the host's environment.

I'm still not clear on how a queen is created though.

Quite liked that. Set's up Franco's character dying early on. Nice atmosphere. Fassbender was cool, "Down the wrong pipe". Don't think we knew that they were on a colonisation mission.

So yeah, it's set's it all up quite nicely.

I liked it although It's weird seeing Franco and that other dude from Pineapple Express in something with such a different tone.

Obviously calling back to the dining room scene of Alien, felt as naturalistic and human.

When is the film supposed to drop?

Ooer. That's a pretty spoilerific trailer tbh.

    Still, yay!

Altho... Does look /really/ similar to the plot of Prometheus.
