Some of the people who post here are clearly idiots but ignoring them seems to be a bit heavy handed. How about a new system where you can rate users so that a suitable title (which only you can see) appears next to each of their posts? Or simply an alternative to the 'ignore' flag which labels them with something like 'mong'. It would help people like me who don't visit the forums every day to remember who we're supposed to mock :/ |

Would be fun though, I guess

NO.
I'm all for a much more liberal attitude to ignoring round here, I know I've been busy with it recently, but user rankings are the worst, thing, ever! -

I don't see how. It wouldn't be any different to the 'ignore' flag which already exists.

I'm not suggesting that people's ratings should be viewable by everyone - only that when you're logged in you see the flag next to people's posts. I don't see how this is any worse than being able to ignore people. -

No that would be handy, it'd be easier to catch up on threads you've posted to and completely forgotten about.

Registered 18 years agoSeriously - if you can't even REMEMBER who's an idiot, and who isn't, chances are that he/she aren't that much of a nuisance.
All that this "labeling" system would do is to increase the ad-hominem attacks tenfold ("well - you might have a good point, but my ranking system says you're a twat. Please fuck off"), and little else.
The fact that your only justification to the system is a half-joke:
It would help people like me who don't visit the forums every day to remember who we're supposed to mock :/
pretty much says it all.
IMO, of course. -

There'd be an 8 seconds rating just for you.

Surely that would be better than the present system which means you never even get to see that person's point?

As I said, I just think that the black and white approach is a little heavy handed.
The tone of my original post was meant to encourage people to respond and generate a debate on the subject. I apologise if this offended anyone. -

I've been here for almost 3 years (...), and I have 3 people on ignore - and I'm pretty sure 2 of them are long-gone puppets/trolls. The point to this is that the "ignore" button is (IMO) only for use in the most extreme cases, to prevent completely braindead types from clogging up the forum. Just because someone says something stupid once or twice, you dont have to ignore them.
If you are that sensitive, I suggest you find another forum. (Didnīt mean that last part in a nasty way, BTW - its just teh way it is). -

Registered 20 years agoI've used another site where every post was rated, and if a post was rated low enough it would be hidden. Also, if your recent posts all got hidden your posts would automatically be hidden until a mod rated them highly. And mod status was determined by getting high ratings in your recent posts.
It works for defending against spammers, but what it absolutely didn't do was increase the quality of conversation. You just got people rating things down they didn't agree with, then sensible people rating them back up, and basically all that faffing took away from time that could be spent in discussion. -

Registered 18 years agoHeh, that sounds like the 'tweakers' comment system.
Also often a guy would have his post rated down, but not hidden yet. Editing his post complaining about the rating and suddenly it'd be rated up again.
It was very good for that site though because it avoiced double posts on the front page. -
