| Yeah, it was such a weird decision to try to diversify at the expense of the reason why the Xbox 360 was so successful. Gamers have always been really fickle. I guess there's some loyalty, but not a great deal. All last gen every multiplat was better on 360, and they decided they didn't have to ensure the same this gen. It's like the decision makers have no interest in their own business. |

Definitely. If Xbox One gets a exclusive I really want I will certainly find a space for a Scorpio next to my PS4.
I reckon the biggest marked for Neo and Scopio both will be people that picked the other console at the start of the gen. If they're priced right, XBOne owners might be tempted to sample all the delights on the Other Side and vice versa. -

Registered 14 years agoThis could be the last console gen for me. I can't be bothered with incremental upgrades every few years. Too confusing for most and too bloody expensive to keep up with from both a consumer and developer perspective.
I like a locked down envelope that developers can learn to get the best out of. If you keep having a shifting target in terms of systems specifications then some developers won't be able resist feature/technical improvements to hit the next hardware release, surely? -

Registered 16 years agoKeep wanting a good console this gen but a Steam Link and a moderately specced PC out performs everything at the moment. -
This rumoured console is rumoured to be coming in late 2017 which is way to late to compete with the ,you guessed it ,rumoured PS4k. It's all getting a bit silly now I think. -

Registered 7 years agoThere were less than 4 years between xbox and xbox360, and limited backwards compatibility, and no games just worked across the two platforms through a single purchase.
If XBox scorpio comes out in 2017, that will be 4 years after the Xbox One, but it seems the plan is that all original Xbone games and all new games will work on both, as well as the 100+ Xbox 360 backwards compatibility games.
What's the problem here?

Registered 14 years agoWhen you put it like that it doesn't sound so bad. Assuming these leaks are close to reality the Neo on the other hand is coming out just 3 years after the PS4, and if the worst case scenario of the original consoles becoming neglected comes to pass, those will feel like 3 very short years.
In short, we probably need to see price and release dates before getting riled up. -

Isn't it kind of the opposite of that, though? At least with Sony, as they are mandating that games must be able to run on the original model. Which to my mind makes the idea of upgrading kind of pointless, as devs won't really be able to use the power to do anything other than make games a bit shinier.

All of which is why I'm thinking VR is the main reason for all this. I haven't tried PSVR myself, but a couple of friends have, and they came away saying, "Yeah... it was alright." -

These new consoles seem like admissions from Sony and MS that their current consoles are a bit shit. We all knew it anyway. From the PS4's jet engine insides and 7 hour controller battery life to the One's failure to hit 1080p in anything that isn't 2D.
We got mugged. But guess what? We are going to get mugged again, oh the joy! -

Registered 6 years agoI remember an article from a Microsoft bod a while ago, talking about games that could support features not yet available when faster machines get released. Presumably he meant graphics features, so they may have been thinking about this business model for a while.

Yeah, sorry - when I said shinier I meant higher res, framerate, effects - all that stuff. Nothing to sniff at of course, but the games wouldn't be structurally different.

Registered 7 years ago970 is $300 today?
In a year with the next gen of AMD/NVIDIA (although if I were a betting man I would bet it would an AMD chip), wouldn't we be expecting 970 performance at a lower cost? Also, further lower cost from the large order.
Will be interesting to see though what price they target. They'll be doing lots of analysis but I can imagine there could a good story to tell where they target the top-end, offering a premium experience and premium price. They got away with charging over $100 for an improved controller. Point is also, you can get most of the experience (and what for many will be the same one as far they can probably tell...) and play the same games using the cheaper Slim version. I think there is a credible scenario in which they would target a higher price, e.g. $500. -

Registered 14 years agoI don't want a console that offers an incremental upgrade, I want something that the people behind it have staked their heart and soul, and are prepared to back it for the next five years, minimum. Blow my mind, or GTFO. -
@Thorbz that would have been about right at the start of the year but I think developers are really starting to get into their groove. But the fact that it's taken 3 fucking years is ridiculous. Before this year the Witcher 3 and Bloodborne were the only titles worth picking up a new console for.
We wouldn't be in this mess if publishers hadn't fucked up and decided that consoles would be DOA with this gen's launch. Underpowering them was damage limitation.
Unless the pricing is very competitive and I can get a decent trade in price for my launch console, then to be frank, fuck this generation
