Also the first game I've played where you get to hold down one button to take aim and another to water the horse while taking a piss. That's some attention to detail.

    Edit: Yay, hello new page!

Guy I work with has just picked this up, been talking about for most of the day and it's got me in the mood to go back to it. I think I'm on Chapter 8 last thing I remember was meeting Heartman. Does anyone have a rough idea of how long I've got left?

@Switch024 think there's about 14 chapters from recollection. Once you cross the tar belt at the end of the chapter you're on it's fairly linear from there with lots of cinematics and boss battles.

    A fair few hours...

@wuntyate Thanks Wunty. Think I'm going jump back in, the story is still fresh in my mind and I want to see it through to the end. A break from Ghost might be good thing too as I don't want to burn out on that.

I started this a couple of days ago and only played an hour or so. The story is so bizarre and Iíve only just started!

The story is great, it's really stuck with me. It's been 6 months or so since I last played it but I can remember pretty much every story beat and all the characters. It's probably because it's all so bizzare but it's rare for me to recall so much about a game.

A few hours in and it's the gameplay that's letting it down for me. Hoping things are gonna get more interesting. Oh, and the menus and particularly the screens that summarise your mission stats are fucking awful. I'll press on.

Probably couldnít have picked a worse mission to come back to. The area I had to pick up from was absolutely rammed with BTs and after meticulously picking me way through I tripped up and ended up in a massive battle with no stamina and zero weapons. Somehow managed to get though it and make the delivery.

Celebrated by having a massive piss in the snow.

Ok, bit further in now, getting used to the clunky menus and can sort of see the appeal of this. The trip to the port city was quite memorable. The world has a stark beauty to it. There is one really stupid design problem with the carried cargo blocking my view of the ordradek or whatever it's called. So I have to keep switching the camera to my other shoulder to see it. Really dumb and it happens a lot. But otherwise I think it's starting to click.

@Nanocrystal strange, there was a patch that came out to make cargo transparent so it doesn't block sight of it.

I took about 100 hours to finish this. Loved it, but had to stop myself grinding on act 3.
One of those games where I found the zone.

The clunky feel to the menus goes in time, traversal as well becomes a cinch once all the upgrades start coming in.

The only parts of the game I donít get on with are the Mule camps, I just donít find them fun at all. As soon as youíre spotted they all know where you and everyone charges straight for you. If Iím forced to go through one it usually ends up with Sam going full Rambo and clearing the whole camp which feels a bit off, especially in the context of the game.

You can negate mule pings which helps. I think i only ever really had to go through one once or twice. Always seemed to manage to work my way around.

Just started this again after getting distracted by something else when it first came out, the Star wars game, I think.
Ignoring the terrible writing it really does have a unique atmosphere to it that is quite compelling. I'm going to give it a proper go this time.

Yeah I normally work my way around if I can, was forced to go through one during this mission Iím on and there was no way I was sneaking though even after negating the ping.

I'm currently offline so no patch for me unfortunately. Good to know they fixed this though.

terrible writing my arse! it's leagues ahead of the usual dross seen in video games, and even most television. what the fuck.

I mean he's very wrong about it being better than most videogame writing but alright, I could concede that but better than most television? Jesus..
I suppose it depends on the television he likes..

It's got some pretty ropey bits but to be fair to it they did try something a little different in parts. Makes it an easier target for labelling as 'terrible writing' whereas stuff that's terrible and by the numbers escapes abit via blending in.
Relative to most action games it was nice playing a character who didn't kill hundreds of people during the course of a story, which I feel like earns it some writing points.

I don't have a big problem with the plot or story beats as such. More the actual script itself ie the words that are coming out of the characters mouths and explanations for why certain things happen.
Kojima has some interesting ideas and striking imagery that would be well served by working with someone who knows how to tell a story.

I'm only about 6 hours in, but I've seen a good few Lucas-style "you can write this shit but we can't say it" lines of dialogue. I wonder if some of this is down to Japanese to English translation at some point in development?

There was one repeated phrase in particular that always jarred and sounded terrible
I'm fragile but not that fragile
