Which MP was it again who thought there was no problem with Ireland as those in Ireland could apply for a British passport and those in Britain vice versa?

to be fair to pt - I’d read his post as meaning that the situation in NI is already pretty febrile (with a deteriorating trend in the past 18+ months, not helped by the lack of functioning government)... and brexit can only serve to make that situation worse, if a solution is not found to the border situation.
Yup. Not entirely sure why Fab decided to lose the plot there.

I remember John Humphries asking an Irish MP if the Irish were so fed up with the backstop negotiations that they felt like joining the UK and leaving the EU.

That was serious question from a publicly funded media outlet, folks.

To be fair he was asking about a point of view argument, that if Dublin were so insistent that the UK stay in the single market/ customs union because the UK is so important to their trade, wouldn’t it be sensible for UK and Ireland to throw their lot in together.

It was a devils advocate question.
Shame people weren’t able to understand what he was asking.

He was giving her the chance to say that the people suggesting that at the time were pillocks, but the internet screamed “He said Ireland should rejoin the UK”, when he didn’t, it was only part of a larger question.

I remember that interview and he didn't come across as playing devil's advocate. Maybe his subtlety is too advanced for me.

All I thought was, are you seriously asking an Irish politician this question, given the strained relations in the past between the two countries, and considering the overwhelming support of the EU in the Irish population. I found it pretty offensive/arrogant, and I'm not even Irish.

this is why adonis has been kept away from seeking elected positions. honestly - the key to understanding this man is the fact that julius nicholson from the thick of it was based on him

Had my European elections through the post. Didn’t expect to get one. Hopefully I can vote the Brexit party to vote myself out out out of the country.

Based purely on being a brexiter or a remainer I'd argue neither should vote Labour. There are obviously many other reasons to vote for a party though.

yet another emblematic symbol of their political incompetence, a man with a bucket on his head could stop the pro-remain parties from getting a seat

@the-cozen-show That is the inevitable outcome, and Marina Hyde put it best when she wrote about Remain snatching defeat from the jaws of victory due to the complete inability to form a plan.

It's so frustrating though that Leave had won and will continue to win precisely because it doesn't need one.

@RichDC marina hyde has a brass neck. her and all her awful mates have spent months fluffing these incompetents, while it has been apparent to any halfway sensible person that painting your face blue and marching with a witty banner is no substitute for 1 having a convincing argument or 2 getting organised. they’re going to get us all killed

tbf, he does mention Nelson Mandela so that's pretty progressive from Gary.

That was actually TOO realistic. Although you should have written ARE as R and spelt MANY as MENY.

I think parliament resumes this week right so, I don't know but, I don't think we're going to see any progress. I think we're still going to have the same back and forths, a repeat of the same debates/disputes with the brexiteers unwilling to budge (things like if brexit meant leaving the common market and unwilling to acknowledge misleading campaigns, misinformation, stuff like that).

And I think she will continue to push for her deal.

@pacrifice She has little choice really. The EU have said that if the UK wants to arrange a trade deal with it, post Brexit, then we have to meet the terms of the deal that was agreed first.

I am not sure if anyone involved knows what the word ‘negotiations’ means at this point. May has kept going back asking for the same things from the EU and Parliament, the EU refuses to offer anything as a compromise and Parliament is so divided that the only thing it can agree on is to reject May’s deal.

The compromises were already offered during the negotiations. That phase is complete now. The UK parliament has to make a decision on one if the following; the negotiated withdrawal agreement, no deal (which leads to the backstop being the first thing on the table during the trade negotiation phase), or revoke A50. That it's going to be another long stretch of clownery coming it off Westminster is about the only thing that's guaranteed.
