Turkey's military has form here. When they think a ruler is trying to override democracy, they step in.

Doesn't the Turkish army have a history of this, if the government becomes too Islamic or right wing they go in and remove them.

I heard there's tanks, helicopters opening fire, and all kinds of shit.

    So it's not looking likely.

Spamdangled and Anthony_UK's comments are eerily similar.

But yes... it does seem like it might well be a "good" thing, still mildly terrifying though.

    From the BBC

Continuing to read the military's statement, the TRT announcer says Turkey's democratic and secular rule of law has been eroded by the current government, Reuters reports. The country is now run by a "peace council" that will ensure the safety of the population, the announcer adds. A new constitution will be prepared "as soon as possible".

    Held vertically too. The animal.
Yeah. And he's still in control.

I actually think their chances of joining may have improved slightly with the coup, depending who takes charge in the aftermath.

Might even be a good thing, IF they joined the EU MIGHT be able to impose some sort of stability and prevent another wannabe dictator rising. That might be ludicrous wishful thinking on my part.

Kind think if the coup fails things will get pretty bad for all concerned.

He means the chicken coop. Mothercruncher obviously prefers poultry to lamb.

This is quite exciting, I've never seen a military coup underway so close to home and so saturated in social media. They're blocking everything from whatsapp to youtube but it's still leaking through.
    A jolly old time.

After the last few weeks, it's refreshing to have another country lose its shit.

I wonder if our Army might consider one if Theresa tries to submit the Article 50? Go on boys and girls, it would be for the best!

I'd support a UK coup at this point.

It would be great if they restore sensible democracy - the Lib Dems would be fine. Who could complain about that?

Bit of a potentially explosive time to have it though right now, with nerves already on edge with Syria and migration crises. Hopefully it's resolved one way or the other quickly.
