With apologies to old-fashioned non-VR-enabled forumites, I thought I'd make this thread for Vive peeps to discuss issues related to the Vive. There's one for the Rift, and no doubt there'll be one for PSVR when it appears.

A decent start might be to see what sort of room scale people are rocking. I've got something like 2M x 1.8M, which is OK for most things but sometimes a little cramped.

My lighthouses are currently propped up on a door, and a curtain rail. Proper classy, like. How about you guys? And by "you guys" I mean the other four people with a Vive. :)

I'm in the process of buying a flat currently (renting atm).

The missus thinks it's because I want to put down roots and get on the ladder.

Really I just want a dedicated Vive room as I don't have any space right now.

    Priorities 101.

Bah. I preferred not splitting the VR stuff into separate threads - would've rather had the Oculus crew join in more with the VR thread, but what the hell.

Roomscale, I'm at about 2 x 2.5m I think. One lighthouse on a photography stand, the other masking-taped to my X-Files DVD collection which sits on a shelf :D

I will probably put some holes in the skirting board (dunno what you call it?) that run around the walls near the ceiling for a more permanent, less kitten-prone solution.

My room scale tends to vary depending on how much I fudge the set up, I think I'm at something like 2x2.4 at the moment. I have one lighthouse wall mounted on its side, and the other is attached to a small plank running from the wardrobe to a book shelf.

Unlike John Walker at RPS I found them very easy to set up - I've had them on the floor, on shelves and on jerry rigged bits of wood, never a problem.

To add to this, the Vive instructions insist you ought to have them angled, pointing at your floor space, but mine point straight forwards and I've had no issues. I do have them behind a sofa and table respectively, so maybe I can't actually walk into the dead zone which is presumably immediately beneath them.

The Oculus thread tends to be about stuff that non-Oculus bods wouldn't care about - I think there's still a healthy crossover of peeps in both. Things like talk of roomscale would be pointless for Rifters/PSVRers so nice to have something here for those discussions.

But hey - if nobody uses this thread, it'll just naturally sink without a trace and the status quo will resume. :)

Has anybody noticed a new Early Access game on Steam called 'Roomscale Tower'? It uses photogrammetry for an action adventure game, looks quite interesting.

The three freebies you get in the bundle are damned good fun, so there's a lot of mileage in them already. Nab all the quality freebies, too: The Lab, nVidia's Funhouse, Budget Cuts Demo, Irrational Exuberance: Prologue, etc.

Pool Nation is worth the cash, and Space Pirate Trainer is a laugh if a little slight for the money.

Cheers dude. sounds like that will keep me busy. Have you played Raw Data? Now I'm thinking maybe I shouldn't buy it if there's all that lot for free. But I hear such good things about it....

No, it didn't really appeal to me I'd have to say. Like a lot of VR games, we're not holding it to the same standards as traditional games. It has bad guys whose run animations see them sliding all over the floor rather than feeling part of the world. That sorta shit takes me right out of an experience, and in Space Year 2016 shouldn't be happening. Seems a little pricey, too. I'm weird, I know. :)

Rec Room is awesome. An online social sports type lobby, where you can mess about in a lobby area playing darts, basketball, table tennis etc.

Then you can throw your self into match of paintball, disc golf, some tennis style game, charades and dodge ball.

It's free and one of the best games out there.

Yeah I second this, a really nice surprise and free.

The boxing games are good as well - actually a pretty intense bit of exercise!

Nice, I've started the download for RecRoom.

Had my first play with Vive this afternoon... I'm impressed! Although I'm horribly hungover today so didn't do me any favours with motion sickness.

Tried the lab and job sim briefly. The sense of actually being inside a game is stronger than I imagined tbh, it works, it really actually works :)

Now I need to install these sensors properly up high and get serious.

Only issue I have really is with blurry vision, but it seems all down to how the visor sits on my face. If I move it with my hand it gets rid of all blurryness. Need to play around with the sizing.

Took me about a week to nail headset position. I now have the head straps fairly loose, so they hug the rear of my skull, then pull the side straps tight. I then have the headset resting on my cheekbones. Feels slightly unnaturally low, but gives me the most sharpness I find. Especially useful for games that require looking downwards or picking stuff up off the floor.

Blurriness could also be down to the lens fogging? With the weather quite hot at the moment I find I have to make sure it's at the same temp as the room (roughly, obvs) before playing.

The Cubicle is worth a download too. Nice experience; best to go into it with as little prior knowledge as possible.

It's a pity the software support is so bad. I actually think the PS VR is going to be the home run this technology needs for the big boy devs to jump on board. It's releasing with plenty of actually finished games, not early access stuff by 1 man dev houses.

There's no doubt Vive will potentially offer you the best experience with the right software support, but I like that Sony are releasing with a large suite of proper games, not just mini tech demos.

By this time next year hopefully all 3 VR sets will be swamped with new AAA games. Will be amazing.

There were plenty of short tech demos on display in the Sony launch lineup. Also plenty of full games across Rift (mainly) and Vive. Too small a market for big firms to invest in heavily right now. Like the Rift, the PSVR content had been moneyhatted to get content.

It'll come. Don't be so dismissive on what is only day two of your VR adventure. :)

I'm not being dismissive, I'm saying it's a pity there aren't many full featured finished games yet and I like that Sony will have quite a few at their release. Which is more or less the same thing you said in different words. We don't need to argue about everything you know ;)

My adventure so far has taught me there are legs in this technology, I'm bloody excited for the future.

I've been following the PSVR fairly closely, and of the 30 launch titles there aren't all that many fully featured games (that I think will be worth a toss). Obviously you think differently, but there's not much in there that gets my blood pumping. Some of them are coming to PC VR headsets early next year, too.

For sure I'd love it if Vive had the sort of sugar daddy that PSVR and Rift have - and Rift really does have some impressive exclusives - but Valve decided to let it sort of find its own path.

The only reason I suggested you're being dismissive is that there are clearly lots of actual, proper, decent length VR games out there that run on the Vive and you haven't even tried them yet. There's a paucity of content, but I'm staggered you've reached the limit of said content on day two! :D There are also a number of non-VR games that have had support patched in (in the racing genre Project Cars and Dirt Rally spring to mind) and they are clearly games of substance that are transformed in VR.

Give it more of a chance is all I'm saying - before looking longingly at the PSVR launch lineup - there will be games you've dismissed out of hand that actually might offer something surprising. There were for me, at least.

yeah I get you, I know there are loads of stuff I haven't tried which will keep me busy, but we really are saying the same thing. Basically this - For sure I'd love it if Vive had the sort of sugar daddy that PSVR and Rift have - and Rift really does have some impressive exclusives - but Valve decided to let it sort of find its own path.

I'm happy, I love the tech - great purchase. I also wasn't aware that Dirt Rally has VR support... why didn't I pick it up in steam sale damn it!

The point where I disagree is where you say Vive doesn't have many full length games. It does. In fact, I'd wager it already has as many as PSVR will on launch. You just haven't found 'em yet! :)

The majority of PSVR launch games look to be very short experiences, like lots of the current PC VR games. Only a handful are "proper" and even amongst them there's a lot of arcadey/arena type games rather than Skyrim style epics.

I'd dearly love Valve to just moneyhat us a Skyrim or something, but it ain't gonna happen. I'm also still hoping for a gameplay revolution, rather than retreading old ground, but sadly retreading is what is happening a lot and also seems to be what PSVR is exclusively doing.

Wait... this is going to end up with me making a list isn't it? I fucking love lists. :D

    yeah give list!

I will browse more. But I'm looking at the PS games such as RIGS, made by a big dev house and the full game being release at launch. Also BattleZone and Rez Infinite. Those 3 are top of my list of VR games to play on any platform.

Looking on Vive, all the games I've found really interesting are all early access by very small dev houses I've not heard of before. And that's almost 6 months after the hardware's out.

Don't forget you can run many Rift games with ReVive. I'm assuming you've heard of Insomniac?

Personally I don't put too much stall in "big dev houses" because, as I say, they're usually making the same ol' games just in VR.

RIGS is an arena battler, right? That's a pretty small scope, it'd have to be amazeballs to have a long life. When you said "full game" I thought you were talking more things like Chronos on Rift which takes a good 10-15 hours on first playthrough. There's not much like that on PSVR - I think Golem is probably closest and that doesn't look great to me. There are many arena style battlers on Vive - Hover Junkers probably the best known - but unless Hawken is still going I doubt there's anything to scratch your big robot itch.

Battlezone is coming to PCVR next year and is, by all accounts, very repetitive - I guess it nails the original in that respect. :)

Rez is unlikely to leave console, I'd guess. Still can't beat the orgazmatron attachment from the original release though, so VR is already behind the curve. ;)
