I could not give two hoots about him and his advice to upgrade my PC as a storage facility for barn owls. I cannot see how getting a barn inside an owl would help Windows XP run the likes of Half Life better.

To the OP, I know chuff all about PC's. But as we are constantly reminded, the PC Master Race is an all inclusive body, aiming for the betterment of gaming by helping each other figure out the perfect spec to run Freecell in HD. They demonstrate this by telling everyone they invest in each other, then belittle anyone who seeks advice, or makes a statement, or comment. They all seem to know better than each other what goes on in a configuration, giving you a list of known issues than positives that can be had with having Motherboard A, the requisite CPU's that will work with it dependent on your budget, and which coupling of a graphics card suits it best, then the ram, the power supply, OS and many other factors that should be considered. Basically ask them what you want it for, and your price range. I'm sure they'll be more helpful then, or tell you to buy a phone and play Pokemon GO.

I've decided to sell my consoles and head back to pc gaming. The only sticking point (if it is one) is I need a mini itx case and so far the only one that will fit the bill is a cooler Master elite 110. Now I know a gtx 960 will fit in this case but not sure what up from that will. I've been out of the game for a while so not as clued up anymore.

My only other option is to buy an alien alpha r2 (i5, 960 version) for £500 and buy the gfx amplifier which will take a 1070.

So my main question is will a 1070 fit in this cooler Master case?

@addyb no the 1070 is 269mm and the case is 210mm

What does "fit the bill" mean?

    http://www.corsair.com/en-gb/obsidian-series-250d-mini-itx-pc-case

That will fit much larger GPUs, 1080 in fact.

Cases should last a few upgrade cycles, not sure whether you'd find yourself irritated at limited ugrade options down the line?

Mmm going to have to rethink this. I haven't got a lot of room in my tv cabinet.  The elite 110 will fit nicely but it doesn't leave a lot of room. Enough for adequate airflow anyway.

    http://www.fractal-design.com/home/product/cases/node-series/node-202

that's another popular case for this sort of thing

i'm not a fan as you can only have 56mm high CPU coolers but other people like it

Cheers mate. The dimensions on the site for my cabinet are the overall and not internal so I'll have a measure of it when I get home tonight.

I've asked a few people I know online for a decent build based on that coolermaster and this is one spec so far.

    Hi Adam,

No worries. For that budget, at 1080p, using that case I would build the following:

    PCPartPicker part list: http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/rxNDcc
    Price breakdown by merchant: http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/rxNDcc/by_merchant/

    CPU: Intel Core i5-6400 2.7GHz Quad-Core Processor (£165.85 @ Scan.co.uk)
Motherboard: MSI H110I Pro Mini ITX LGA1151 Motherboard (£62.79 @ Amazon UK)
    Memory: Patriot Viper 4 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-2400 Memory (£61.56 @ Amazon UK)
    Storage: Seagate Barracuda 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive (£41.99 @ Novatech)
Case: Cooler Master Elite 110 Mini ITX Tower Case (£39.85 @ Amazon UK)
Power Supply: EVGA 500W 80+ Certified ATX Power Supply (£42.09 @ BT Shop)
    Other: XFX Radeon RX 480 4GB GDDR5 HDMI 3x DisplayPort PCI-E Graphics Card (£182.99)
    Total: £597.12

I would stick an ssd in it as well for the boot drive.

I'm pretty damn sure that graphics card won't fit in that case. The website says max 210mm and the card website says its 240mm

looking at pcpartpicker, you'd have to get a custom card like this
    http://www.novatech.co.uk/products/components/nvidiageforcegraphicscards/nvidiagtx1070series/gv-n1070ixoc-8gd.html

and its more expensive than the RX480.

I'd stick an SSD in for sure, but its all about how much you want to spend.

Got the wife to measure internally (the stand that is :))

    It's (H)220mm (W)570mm (D)400mm

Another spec I whipped up myself.
Is it worth the extra money to go for a 970 over a 960 or is it not worth it?

You could always go AMD and get a 480 if you don't mind your PC setting on fire.

£760 seems massively expensive for a PC with a 960 in it.

Guess that's what they cost nowadays? Brexit!!

Airflow is important, let the "don't put your 360 in a TV cabinet" thread be a lesson about the perils thereof!

Indeed. A few years ago I spent a similar amount and got a 970 in it.

Drivers for their GPUs are supposed to be utter gash.

    There was this:

    http://www.kitguru.net/components/graphic-cards/jon-martindale/amd-cops-to-rx-480-power-issue/

It's apparently been fixed now though.

Tell you what it's hard work once you've been out of the loop for a while.

    Critique on this spec please!

    I'd say that's solid but I would:

Get 8gb (upgrade later to 16gb if u need to)
    Push to 1tb hdd

Cheers mate. Haven't built a pc for over 10 years either. Equally excited and dreading it. Will have to look stuff up.
  • Deleted user 15 August 2016 18:55:18
That memory seems particularly expensive. Any reason you've gone with that over something cheaper like the corsair vengeance?
  • Deleted user 15 August 2016 18:58:13
    @Spectral

Guess I was just dropping more expensive bits in there just to see. I have no issue with corsair vengeance. It's all for tweaking this build. I could go cheaper on the ram and up the hdd size.
  • Deleted user 15 August 2016 19:04:21
I recently used the 3200Mhz Corsair Vnegeance in my new build and have no complaints with it. The heat spreaders on them are low profile too so shouldn't get in the way of the cooler even with the space constraints.

Switching to corsair and bumping the hdd to 1TB actually makes it £15 cheaper :)
