I don't think it's a side project at all. I think they're taking it slow. They need to get the logistics in order and the assistant localized. Service and repair have been getting some flak, they better sort that out. Etc.

Or they shitcan the entire thing next year. Like Google+, Reader, Allo and Inbox.

is that true, though? i mean, apart from the camera the spec on these google phones doesn't seem all that impressive considering the cost.

its got more or less the same basic specs as every other flagship on the market. Its the stuff added on top of that that splits them.

The point was that their hardware is so bland (the phones at least) as to be a turn off. The camera hardware is not the most advanced on the market. Neither is their gyro (whichs days is used for computing images) or the flash. I'm not even sure if it's two tone.

I said that they're not competing with hardware but software.

They don't add a second or even third camera, yet they are market leaders with their last gen phone bc software (which is what they use as a differentiator). They have a massive lead in machine learning AND data sets to train their models on. Makes sense to try and build around that rather than better screens (Samsung dominated) chips (Apple dominated for now) or sex appeal (Apple dominated)
I'm not sure what the point is here.

HTC make the hardware. They tinker a little with it, but I don't know whey you would would describe it as bland.

There's not a huge difference between Android OS across brands.

I'd say 95% of customers buy a phone on marketing. They are not at home reading about gyro's or processor speeds.

Nokia and Motorola, I believe. Pretty much stock.

I'm a bit underwhelmed by this new Pixel. I was going to consider it, but now I think I'll hold onto my iPhone 6 for a 5th year. Get my money's worth out of it, as I paid outright and have been on cheap sim-only deals ever since. It's a bit slow, but I can put up with it for another 12 months or so.

I'm going to get the next one plus because the Pixel was underwhelming.

Is the Slate not hitting the UK? Couldm't see anything about it on the UK store page.

@BurnoutJunkie sure it will eventually, they often don't bother bringing a product over here for ages (Google Home Max) for no apparent reason.

Its not got type approval from the FCC yet, so its not on sale anywhere.

Nice, hadn't heard of that. I would be quite tempted for myself but my wife hates Android/ChromeOS. If we go for anything like that, it'll probably need to be the Surface.

It's as if someone read this piece on the iPhone notch and thought
"Naaah... I call bullshit. And I'll PROVE IT!" (And then failed)

The weird thing is, it's got a fairly big chin. Was just sliding the screen down really that hard?

THIS is how you compete with hardware
    https://www.theverge.com/2018/10/11/17963172/samsung-galaxy-a9-release-date-news-features-four-cameras

Not just the cameras (although definitely the cameras) but also the nice trendy gradients.

I've really loved my Pixel XL and was pretty much set to upgrade it with the P3XL this year, but I think I'm going to wait for the reviews after seeing how second-rate the hardware design looks. I know the hardware isn't really Google's focus with these phones, but the damned thing is sporting both the world's most invasive notch AND a chin that would even give HTC a run for their money!

The OnePlus 6T is looking really quite appealing by comparison.

Having got a Pixel 2 a few months ago, I think the quality is amazing. It's fast, responsive, has a great fingerprint sensor, the camera is insanely good. I got it on the cheap as I'd never pay 600 quid or whatever it costs at full price. I just don't understand what the hell people want that goes beyond such a level of phone. Splitting hairs once you get to this level IMO.

Pulled the trigger earlier and pre-ordered a Pixel 3 XL 128GB Black. Stuck it on PayPal Credit to take the sting out the cost.

The hardware is solid but Google's software / AI is class leading stuff and will make the Pixel 3 a pretty amazing phone.

The fact they can stick with a single lense camera and produce pictures that look as good, if not better, than phones with multiple lenses, just shows how great the hardware and software combo is.

I can actually vaguely believe those. The Pixel 2 has exceptional low light quality. You can get reasonably close to those night shots already, albeit a lot more noisy. But it's impressive they get anywhere close to not just a severely underexposed image.

I've bit on a 3xl too which is being delivered today. Got a pixel 2 at the mo and love it apart from being a bit too small which the 3xl should deal with nicely! Camera on the 2 is insane and by the looks of it that carries on in the 3. They really are good pieces of kit.

First impressions, after initial setup, the phone is nice feels good in the hand. The notch is not as distracting as I thought it would be. Damn it is thin can see the benefits of ditching the headphone jack, doesn't feel flimsy though.

The new one button gesture control will take a little getting used to, but it is quite logical.

    Will play properly tomorrow.
