Aside from "play song X" or "add X to the shopping list" I have found no legitimate use for it that didn't respond with "I'm sorry, I don't know how to do that". Oh, and the weather. But that's about it. Edited by Dirtbox at 20:45:39 27-09-2017 |

Registered 5 years agoYep. All works fine for me. Add the Harmony skill, have Alexa search for new smart home stuff, done. -

Registered 17 years ago@Your-Mother I’ve linked the accounts and added the skills (they show up on my command list) but it doesn’t see any devices when I search (they’re on the same network) and when I say the skill commands she says she doesn’t understand.
Even my Sonos only shows up on the device scan one in three times, and the commands for that always work. -
My Alexa current usage:
1. Weather
2. Time
3. Is it going to snow this week?
4. Music
5. Playing with the hue lights in the front room
6. Ask Google unofficial skill cos Bing is shit
7. Personal Alexa skills
8. ???
9. Profit -

Registered 20 years agoStill can't really see the point of these, until we have our homes completely wired and integrated. Like "Open the curtains", "Make an espresso".
Going to play with my wife's so I can shout "What's my blood sugar" and "How much charge has my car got", mainly to annoy my family. -

Registered 16 years agoMy wife seems to fear some kind of AI uprising and talks to the echo like a person, meaning that it absolutely can't understand her.
'Alexa, could you maybe play something Christmassy, maybe something choral, nothing too modern? Thank you'
'im not sure how to do that' -

Registered 18 years agoI use mine as a digital radio and an ok Bluetooth speaker for podcasts. Hue lights too. So pretty happy for £35. -

Registered 17 years agoGetting pretty annoyed with my Alexa’s flat out refusal to see my Harmony now. I’ve updated the hub to the latest firmware, synced it, power cycled it, put it in pairing mode, unlinked and relinked the account, but it refuses to acknowledge its existence. -
Is anyone getting the Amazon Spot? Wife has asked me what I want for my birthday in a couple of weeks and I quite fancied an Echo since I really can't think of anything I want besides a few kindle books. -

Registered 13 years agoWe got an Echo plus for the lad's Xmas. S'allright, so we bought another one (Echo) for downstairs too.
Speakers are decent enough for a bit of Spotify streaming too. Saved me forking out for Sonos stuff for a while I think!
I think the Dot's are supposed to be worse for sound though. If you have Spotify and amazon prime and whatever other shit can be linked, it'd be more than worth it I think.
Edit:Just googled the Spot thing Addy mentioned, better hope the missus doesn't see that, or she'll be getting one of those too. Maybe something smaller would be handy to get rid of the dab radio in the kitchen...

Registered 16 years agoThe spot seems fine until you notice that camera on the top. You then need to have a serious think about whether or not you trust Amazon enough to let them put a camera in your bedroom. -
Same goes for the mic to be fair. I find my dot kinda pointless, anyone wanna buy one? -
I got one for Xmas, complete surprise gift from my mum. It's sat in the kitchen and I use it as a glorified radio when tidying/pots etc. It's also great for reminders and streaming music and i do like trying to beat alexa with akinator app.
I can say for definite that if it hadn't been bought for me I would never have got it myself. -
I'd have no problem with it being in the bedroom. I only snake the wife in the kitchen. With her written consent of course. -
Sausage surprise? -
Toad in the hole more like. -
Never try Addy'B's mayo...
