The longest serving monarch died today. King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand.

Registered 16 years agoConsider the amount of development Thailand has managed over the last 70 years.
Also worth commenting that he put a lot of effort into visiting every remote corner of the country to promote ideas such as more modern farming ideas.
At the very least it's easy to understand why Thais are incredibly upset. -

Registered 14 years agoAs for the mass outpouring of grief, it's all a bit Emperors new clothes to me. The brainwashing in Thailand by the Thai elite has been incredibly successful. It's one of the things that bothers me the most living here, the sycophancy to the monarchy and the "Thai people". He may have a done a few good things in the 60's and 80's but he looked like he had alzheimers for years. He's out of his misery, to me that's a good thing. -

Registered 15 years agoHe kept Thailand relatively peaceful for a long time. I would put money on civil war and/or violent uprisings within six months now.
Going there in a couple of days on a visa run, might be for the last time if things turn out as expected

@FuzzyDucky
You know, there were some really great, proper kings in history that were better than any elected leader. Pedro II of Brazil, Sejong of Korea, Sulemein the Magnificent just to name a few. Their respective countries (Brazil, North Korea, the Warring Middle East) would probably do anything to get them back rather than suffer under what corrupt government and what lasting dictatorship or war they live now.
Not to mention types like Hitler, Trump, Musolini and Putin being a symptom of people's elections.
It's just that the feudal system is a bit more hit and miss than the vetting of democracy.
For all we know, Bhumibol was one of those really great kings that were better than any elected leader. If the entirety of Thailand is weeping, he probably was.
