How do I get rid of Steam's "VR" category?

I'm not interested at all in VR.

However, I've owned a little game called Subnautica and it has recently patched in the ability to use VR with it.

Big deal, I'm still not interested at all in VR.

Imagine my suprise then, that Steam now gives it its own little "VR" category. This category has popped up in my library ever since Subnautica's patch and I simply can't seem to get rid of it. I know how to create my own folders/categories and delete them, so that isn't a problem, but the VR category seems to break the rules to be completely out of my control.

I hate it. I want control over how my library looks!

Anyone have any idea how to get of Steam's VR section?

It'll still appear with the rest of your library as well. The VR section is just to limit your library to games that have VR support. Don't see any need to get rid of it.

    ... Unless I've compltely misunderstood :-P

No. It is possible for me to at least hide Subnautica in my library. With that done, the Steam VR Category disappears as well. The category CAN be eliminated, but it requires me to hide games I don't even play as a VR product, which is annoying.

Don't see any need to get rid of it.
I do. I have 200+ games. I want order in my lists and the ability to dictate in what folder I place games.

    ... Unless I've compltely misunderstood :-P
    Just half.

I guess you have a different layout for your library, the only way I sort mine is with the drop-down list that comes up when hovering over 'Library', assumed you meant the VR section there. My mistake!

    @MatMan562

You and I still seem to be miscommunicating. Maybe some screenshots will help:

This is the situation. In my drop down list, I have a category called "VR".

    I want it eliminated!

I have other categories as well as you might be able to see, subdividing my collections into "Indie" "Mainstream" and "Finished" just to name a few. THESE, are of my own creation. I can put games in there, I can take them out. I can delete these categories. This sense of order, makes me happy.

The "VR" category has been pushed on me by either Steam and Subnautica. I cant change it, delete it, put things into it, or put things out. It infringes on my sense of order, making me UNHAPPY.

I want it gone! Subnautica in just my games section is enough. The bloody VR crap can sod off.

There is only one solution I've found and this is HIDING subnautica. Because I have no more VR titles that way, Steam seems to lift the category.

This is still not ideal, since it will also hide Subnautica from everywhere else. I want it and other titles like it, in my library, without the "VR" category cropping up.

    Anyone? Any help?

    Bloody Hell Steam. :/

Great job giving me a reason to do everything in my power to migrate over to GoG.com.

This is a change I was not looking for having pushed on me.

Nope, just cursed with a narrower sense of order and aesthetics.

I've got that "VR" category in my Library too, thanks to Elite Dangerous in my case.

As far as I can see, the VR category is forced if you have any game installed that has been tagged with that category by Steam.

Steam won't let you remove default category tags from your games, only add new custom ones, so your only option if you don't want to see that "VR" category is to uninstall or hide offending games that cause it to appear.

Which is ridiculous. Really, within your own library, you should be able to freely edit / remove any default categories Steam has chosen to tag your purchases with.

As it's just that one game (for now) your best bet is probably just to hide it in your Library and launch the game from a desktop icon. That's not going to remain a viable workaround, though, if lots of games start adding VR gubbins.

Hahaha! Yeah, so other than a tight sphincter apparently, I also know how to Hyperbole. There's more reasons of course. Better Quality Control and it being linked to the most awesome developer ever being second and third.

To be honest, I made a pledge to check GoG first and Steam second whenever I can before this happened. This is just an excuse to follow up on that pledge. ;-)

    Cheers!

@Skirlasvoud I'd be careful. The almost complete lack of any customisation options in the GoG client might push you over the edge.

    @UncleLou

Seriously, I'd rather NOT have ANY options and everything is set in stone, rather than being able to customize EVERYTHING... EXCEPT one minor detail. This, simply because the latter option feels more wrong.

The storefront lacking any customization options, I can learn to live with. Apparently it cannot be helped and I'll shrug it off. There's a system, it's cool, I'll deal with it.

When lord Gaben throws a couple of customization options my way and omits the option to switch off the one thing that conveniently draws attention to SteamVR, something I don't have, I get pissed.

It's like Micro-Transactions. The exact same problem in fact. If your game works out of the box and there's a solid gaming system that I just have to play around with, I'm happy.
Add things to allude to other systems, options and abilities outside that system, or include them as an annoyance that will only be relevant/get lifted if I throw in a couple of more bucks, and I start questioning the soundness of the entire body of work. I'd rather throw the baby out with the bathwater in that case, rather than dealing with a dev's/publisher's perfunctory bullcrap.

Micro transactions can sod off, Pre-order bonusses can sod off, Newell's VR category can sod off. The guy took a big, moist, slimy dump in the pool and regardless of the massive amounts of water in it to dilute the act and regardless of the throngs of people still swimming in it, yelling that it's no big deal, I refuse to swim in it anymore.

I trust GoG and CDProject to give me a reliable digital platform that I can trust to try its best, to work with me.

That trust in Steam is now shaken if it burdens me with things I haven't asked for.

@Skirlasvoud I think you're exaggerating, massively. It's just a little, unobtrusive thing to keep the VR games *you already have* out of the main category. It's not a ploy to sell a Vive to you.

You might very well be right UncleLou. I'm willing to admit to fair, public, reason, that I'm exaggerating.

Personally however, I have to ask myself why they haven't given me an option to deactivate the category either. And just with microtransactions, it's a niggle in the back of my mind that will haunt me.

Again, I might be exaggerating, but I feel my Steam experience is somewhat tainted and reserve the right to pack up my bags and go.

    @Dirtbox

Do they also have a guy near the entrance putting pork in your trolley?

Do they, when you're no longer in their store(front) and have gone home with your shopping bag/library list, put a sticker on your bag reminding you that there is pork?

Do the grocery bags they give you, contain a little extra subcompartment, meant for only pork and nothing else will fit in there?

If you ever make the mistake of buying pork there, is there a construction crew that tails you back home, barges in and constructs you a pantry in your living room, for your pork and only your pork?

'Cause that's how Steam's VR category is behaving. It's there, I can't rename it, can't move it, put other things in or delete it.

As a fellow member of the 200+ games list; amen I say...

Which is why proper categorization is such a bitch to me.

The steam client needs *complete* overhaul from the ground up. Now that we're starting to see a bit of a decline in popularity from the generation who were born in this "pc master race" crap, we might get to see a new client in the next, 10 years?

Noone's putting anything in anyone's bag. You bought games that have VR support, that's why you have that category. This pork comparison is leading nowhere. It's not a microtransaction, it's no advertisement, it's a subcategory for games with specific features that you bought. it's the same thing as your "games" category (which you can't remove, either). It's a minor UI niggle at worst.

It's when your neighbour's dog starts saying "VR" to you that you really have to worry.
