Registered 14 years agoEssentially there are two types of collection - ones that are user-generated and games are manually added, and ones that are computer generated by the game obeying certain criteria, such as 'installed' and, well, 'games'. The latter have always been ones you can't delete, and with good reason - if you could, then it's conceivable that you could delete every category and then have no way to see any games in your library!
Of course it made sense to have VR games automatically go into their own category - let me tell you, when I'm actually in VR and selecting a game then it's very necessary - but it's the first ever criterion-based category that is only useful to certain players. So the code for having this category 'removable' is lacking just because it's never been needed before.
But look, Valve can be surprisingly agreeable when it comes to changes to the interface. All you have to do is submit the suggestion that the VR category only shows up on systems where SteamVR is installed, or whatver Oculus equivalent there is to that. For my part it does irritate me to have the VR list show up on my laptop. It might happen - not soon, but as we've seen with their tweaking of review system, they take ideas on board eventually.

@UncleLou: I have two games in my VR folder, neither of which I bought for that feature. They appear in the main list where I'd expect them to be - why on Earth would I want them listed again? If they did a similar thing for another feature that I have NEVER bought a game for - like Multiplayer - then it would add a huge additional folder to the main list. If they did it for other tags too - it would soon become really annoying. -

Registered 11 years ago... Like Steam subdividing games by genre and controller style? M+K, controller recommended, Indie game, Action, RPG, strategy?
Yup, that'd be a nightmare. I ask myself why steam doesn't do that, but they DO do the "VR" category.

BINGO!
I mean, if you select the top heading "Library", you can already switch between music, games, VR, software.
Why doesn't Steam resign VR titles to just that option? Why does the Category HAVE TO BE smack dab in the middle of games? Why doesn't it organise for similar controller styles as well, like Controller and Mouse and Key?
Advertisement is why.

I think it is definitely a nudge in the direction of "well, I have some VR-capable games, why not buy a headset?"
@Skirlasvoud I think you're exaggerating, massively. It's just a little, unobtrusive thing to keep the VR games *you already have* out of the main category. It's not a ploy to sell a Vive to you.
It's exactly what I would do as a complete and utter bastard. -

Registered 10 years agoI had the VR category pop up but thankfully it was for a game I didn't want to play so I could just hide that game.
When the VR category comes up again as it includes a game or games I *do* want to play then I will be very slightly miffed by it. -

Guys *I* bought a DVD the other day, and it has the subtitles in multiple langauages, and I just *can't* get rid of the Czech and Polish option in the menu, although I'll never use them. It's a ploy to make me learn foreign languages, I tell you.

Hehehe, this actually getting kinda fun! I like metaphores.
I'd counter with a metaphore where the subtitles are in three different languages below the screen throughout the entire movie, but since the movie is the game in this allegory, the category has stopped bothering me past that.
I guess this indicates that you and I have a different relationship with our Steam Library. You see it as the settings menu: an afterthought as long as you get to start the game.
I see it as my garden. I am a collector. Yes I could plop down there and have a beer regardless, like you probably would have, but part of my enjoyment comes from the fact that I make gardening and those surroundings into an hobby. If I see a weed, I want it plucked, where you might be less inclined.
Enough with the Metaphores though.
Let's just agree on one thing though. I have a personal quibble, and I sought help. Yes, silly little problem that I perhaps, shouldn't waste so much time on... but it is equally silly for someone not bothered by it, to speak up and make a whole point out of acting like it's not a big deal. Steam added the problem and could have just as easily avoided it by giving users options. You lose nothing if they give me the ability to switch it off again.
Allow me the ability to run my garden my way, instead of hang over the fence commenting that I'm getting worked up over nothing when I ask the neighborhood if they've found a solution against that one dandelion I can't seem to kill.
Thanks for the replies everyone. If nothing, the differences and metaphors are funny. By now I've figured it can't be helped, so, this thread has served its purpose.

I want the VR list on top with regular "old" games on the bottom. -

I think you can do that one yourself, fortunatly enough. Steam won't allow you to delete the VR category, but you can make one yourself. I'm happy you guys have the option.
Right click the game you'd like in its own top list. Click the "set category" option. Then, create your own VR folder! If you want it on top, name it "a VR" or something so it gets alphabetametized.
Then create another category called "Other games" and put everything else in there. (EDIT: You don't even need to do that. Everything is already in a "Games" directory that you can close.)
Close the "Games" folder, open the "(a) VR" folder and presto, whenever you start up steam, your VR games are the first to show on top, while everything non-VR is hidden somewhere else.
Again, happy you guys have that option.

There seems to be an issue with some games not being tagged for VR. The Star Wars Tattooine thing was like that, I think, although may be fixed now.

My list is always sorted by 'recent' anyway - only way to make headway into my backlog without something further down the list tempting me away. -
