Not sure if the MCU thing entirely matters, honestly. Not to me anyway. Who the characters are is significantly less important than what they can do mechanically in the game.
  • Deleted user 6 December 2016 13:08:16
Aye, I'm sure the vastness of the Marvel universe will provide characters that fill similar roles.

It's just weird that it was Xmen that started the Marvel/Capcom relationship and now it seems they're being omitted. They're certainly some of the most iconic characters.

Marvel/Disney want the rights back, so they're doing everything they can to eradicate them from existence...outside of the comics at least.
  • Deleted user 6 December 2016 13:33:35
That's a risky move, they could just end up contributing to their irrelevance.
  • Deleted user 6 December 2016 13:34:28
isn't that what they did with fantastic four?

But they can make them irrelevant then bring them back their own way once they own the rights.

There's still no definitive confirmation that they wont be in the game though. The gameplay shown Marvel characters were more like the comics than the movie adaptations.

Look at MvC3 as an example of this. Wolverine and co retained their 80's styled costumes instead of the film versions around at the time.

That's why the MCU rumour is super vague. We don't really know what it precisely means.
There's only one way I read that, and it's this:

Does it mean only characters already seen in and announced as future MCU appearances?
Any other variation isn't actually the MCU but comic universes.
The comics are all over the place at the moment: FF are dead, Wolverine is dead, Stark has retired and Ironheart has taken over Iron man's status, Jane Foster is Thor, etc, etc.
The MCU characters are, arguably, more relevant and recognisable to the masses.

MCU would specifically mean the heroes and villains/groups/alien races in the films/shows:

    Avengers/Age of Ultron/Infinity War
    Captain America/Winter Soldier/Civil War
    Iron Man/2/3
    The Incredible Hulk
    Thor/Dark World/Ragnarok
    Guardians of the Galaxy/Vol. 2
    Ant Man/&The Wasp
    Doctor Strange
    Black Panther
    Spider-man: Homecoming
    Captain Marvel
    Agents of SHIELD
    Agent Carter
    Daredevil
    Jessica Jones
    Luke Cage
    Iron Fist
    The Defenders
    The Punisher
    The Inhumans
    Cloak & Dagger

There are still a huge amount of characters available in those, and certainly enough to fill the shoes of the missing X-men franchise.

    But we'll see, I guess.

MvC has never been about pandering to the masses - it's always been more about the greatest comic book hits and variations.

Better question is which villain characters are there going to be. Dormammu, Doom, Taskmaster, Magneto, MODOK, Sentinel, Super Skrull... they've all been well represented previously.

Yeah, but Marvel didn't have a multi-million dollar MCU to put weight behind with MvC3. They only had the first iteration of a few characters at that point.

    Villain-wise, you'd have:
Thanos, Ronan, Loki, Malakith, Algrim/Kurse, Red skull, Abomination, Yellow Jacket, Klaw, Ultron, Whiplash, Killian, Dormammu, Mordo, Kaecilius, Vulture, Shocker, Kingpin, Kilgrave, Elektra, Nobu, and more.

There's already the scope for a decent game.
  • Deleted user 6 December 2016 15:45:32
You forgot Madame Gao, possibly the greatest fighter of them all.

Yeah, the MCU's rogues gallery is shit.

    "and more" ;)

There are only two female villains though: Elektra and Nebula.

I'm just relieved that we'll see this on xbox after Streetfighter went PS exclusive. I'd still really like an Ultra SF5 on xbox but from what Capcom have been saying it seems unlikely.

I'm happy that UMvC3 is inbound too but I guess it means that it won't go backcat as I already own a digital copy on X360.

Is SF5 even a full game yet? Still wont get this unless a few X-men are in it Wolverine 100% Deadpool and a little love for Gambit hehe. I couldn't care less for Marvel's other heroes well maybe I like Spider-Man also :p but the rest meh.

UMvC3 is already out, on PS4 at least. Don't know if that's coming to XBO.

So if anyone is up for matches let me know. I've reverted back to scrubby plays until I find a team I'm happy with.

Right now Hulk/Hsien-ko/Hawkeye has been a bit weird.

Didn't know they'd released UMvC3 on the PS4, so tempted!

PC and Xbox being released in March.

Or just random NPC's. See: Frank West zombies and Phoenix Wright Maya/the dog/etc in MVC3.

Don't forget Agents of SHIELD guys!

Coulson could arrive at the end of each match ready to fight only to find everyone's gone home already.

Looks like a 0.99p iOS/android app or free to play pile of shit. There are gameplay screenshots floating around and it looks awful.

Also has 6 dlc characters on release.

I would assume the "MCU only" thing is an error. More likely it just means they wont use any of the Fox licensed characters like other recent Marvel games, such as Lego Avengers and Future Fight. It still means no Fantastic Four or Xmen, but the likes of She-Hulk and Spider-Gwen could still appear.

Captain Marvels inclusion would mean things like the Runaways, Cloak and Dagger, and Squirrel Girl would be fair game too though, so there's room for a rather diverse roster either way.

Yeah, I'm giving this a miss. Gameplay wise, it seems to be doing most of the things i wanted to make it less of a headfuck for old people but I'm not rewarding that DLC strategy again.

Look at her arms! Absolutely horrible.

Even if you love marvel vs capcom games, you'd be off your fucking head to buy this at launch given what happened with SFV.

If it is released at a budget price, its still pretty crappy but I could be convinced to live with it. If I need to drop 70 quid to get the full product, it can eat its own arsehole.

How is killer instinct the *only* game to get this right, ffs?

SFxT gameplay with a Marvel skin and SFV's content policy.

Congratulations Capcom. You've just fucking ruined MVC. You absolute cocks. All you had to do was change the roster about and tweak certain things from UMVC3, but no.

    DED GAEM.

Back on the Tekken train, choochoo.

It's amazing that it looks worse than MVC3 which is now over 6 years old.
