Someone suggested in the DOOM thread we have a separate thread for /noclip, so here it is! First documentary series was on Rocket league. Second one on Doom 2016. Great stuff to watch - Rocket league: |

Registered 11 years agoIt's actually a brilliant idea by O'Dwyer and I've enjoyed both documentaries he's produced so far - he's also picked two perfect games to kick things off with.
I would prefer if he made one longer video per documentary though, it feels very disjointed splitting them.
If he wants BIG numbers and wants to make Noclip a huge success, he'll go after a game like The Last Guardian next : something with controversy where there is clearly a story that needs to be told about the development.
Will be keeping an eye on Noclip -

Registered 16 years agoI came out of the first two parts of the Doom retrospective a huge fan of Hugo Martin. I'd never heard of the guy before, but they honestly couldn't have picked a better person as the creative lead.
Really looking forward to the final part. This has been ridiculously good. -
Is that the guy in the black shirt? What a great interviewee if so! So passionate, so affable. I'd love to have a drink with the guy. -

Registered 16 years agoI think so. He's the guy who went into full nerdgasm about Robocop and how he's such a badass .gif)
I especially loved the comment about players discovering what the demons are. "Who fucking cares, right?". The IP is in great hands. -
That's the guy. What a legend. -

Turns out I didn't know there was a difference between Danny O'Dwyer and Danny Dyer either. Huh.

I'm a little bemused by how his accent goes american for the vt voiceover bits. Guess he recorded them after being overseas a while.
Edit: Though having just watched the whole first doom episode, either I got used to it, or it was only really true for the first vt in that.
Also, it's pronounced 'id' as in Freud's 'The Ego and the Id'? Me and my mates have always pronounced it as I.D.

Crowd-funding, is that for projects that banks won't give loans on ;D -

Registered 12 years agoI watched the first part of the Doom doc a little while ago and enjoyed it. It reminded me of the three-part Story of Overwatch doc that Danny O'Dwyer did for Gamespot, which is also worth a look if you enjoyed the Doom one.
I'll watch the rest this evening, I think. The game's on the Christmas list

Their first logo had ID in uppercase (although the D was smaller) so maybe that was why? Since then though it's always been a lowercase 'id'

One of my work colleagues was the same until I said 'id' to him recently so you aren't alone.
edit: from giantbomb's page on id:

The company was originally called Ideas From the Deep but they decided to shortened it to simply id, which stands for "in demand," and is pronounced as in "did" or "kid." The name also had another meaning which is referring to id, one of the three parts (The other two being ego and super-ego) of the brain that behaves by the pleasure principle. Even though id has since moved on, Ideas From The Deep still exists to this day as a mobile gaming company but it no longer has any relationship with id Software.

The Doom documentaries are awesome! And I love the split format, it means I can watch it in chunks on my phone on bus without losing the thread of it all.
Definitely going to check out the Rocket League one. -

Registered 11 years agoThis is a brilliant documentary. Wonder how our own Johnny Chiodini thinks about one of his old Gamespot Colleagues doing things like this.
His own Low battery series isn't too much different from things like this. Feel we have good quality on Eurogamer as well. -

Registered 8 years agoI'm going to have to become a patron. If this doc is indicative of the overall quality then I'm fully on board with this guy.
In particular to id and DOOM, these guys are awesome. You can tell that they just love what they have made, and they have reason to. -

As a follow up to part 3... I've been subscribed to Mick Gordon's YouTube channel for a while and earlier this year he put up a two part feature on the music:
And a couple of cool music videos. One for "Rip and Tear" and one for my favourite track from the game - BFG Division
